Anyone who knows me knows that when it comes to spending money...I don't like to. It's really as simple as that. Call it cheap, call it frugal...if I can get it cheaper, I will! But I also like to be environmentally conscience, and when many hear this- they assume that going green will actually cost them more money. Oh, I suppose I can see where these assumptions come from- a quick look through the cleaning or beauty aisles would quickly show us that natural products DO tend to have a higher price tag than their more mainstream counterparts, but it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, I have found that in many ways- going green has actually SAVED us green as well.

Are you looking for ways to go green without sacrificing your bank account?

Here are 5 simple ways I have found to live greener and save money:

  1. Make Your Own Cleaners. Looking at the price tag on natural cleaners can be a little overwhelming, but for my day to day cleaning I have found a simple mixture of vinegar, water and an essential oil of choice (I like orange!) is all I usually need! Throw in some baking soda and there's truly little else I need!! You can go more in depth than these simple cleaners, of course- but these suit most of our day to day needs perfectly!

  2. Go Energy Efficient. Now, most of us see this and think of appliances like our washer/dryer or dishwasher... and if you can replace these things at the moment, then these are certainly great options! But there are smaller scale options to consider as well- shower heads and faucets that reduce water usage, more energy efficient light bulbs, and of course, simply turning off electronics not in use! All of these are not only better for the planet, but will also reduce your monthly utility bills! Win/win!

  3. Ditch the Disposables. Take a look around your home. How many disposable products do you see that have reuseable counterparts? Diapers, paper towels, plates, the list goes on...that's money we are literally throwing away each week. Now, we might not be in a position to get rid of every disposable in our lives, but pick a few that would fit your lifestyle and watch the savings roll in. Of course, in our family cloth diapers are the big reusable option we use- but we also use kitchen towels instead of paper, real plates, etc... the savings can be tremendous.
  4. Recycle/Upcycle. We all learned in elementary school to recycle, reduce reuse...but how many of us actually put it into practice? Set aside a separate kitchen trash bin for recyclable goods, find a center to take them and get paid for your trash! Or upcycle and reuse that trash yourself! It can be washing up jars and popsicle sticks to use in crafting...or simply saving plastic bags for bathroom trash cans and shredding papers for the bottom of a pet's cage.
  5. BUY Recycled. Speaking of recycling, did you know that there are MANY recycled items available for purchase as well. Paper goods, dinnerware, you name it! In fact, Energizer has just released the very first battery on the market that uses recycled batteries/materials: Energizer EcoAdvanced! Now, if your family is anything like mine, you probably find yourselves going through batteries like crazy...and they are not cheap! I've tried going for generic, dollar store brands to save money- but found that they drained much too quickly- not cost effective or eco-friendly at all! So I headed to my local Walmart to pick some up to try out myself.

These new batteries are Energizer's longest lasting alkaline batteries ever...which means you'll buy less- saving you money in the long run. (As an added bonus, if you like to coupon or buy in bulk to save, Energizer EcoAdvanced holds up to 12 years in storage!!) This is truly energy you don't have to feel guilty about.

As you can see, there are many super simple steps you can take to lead a more eco-friendly life while saving money! And to help you save even MORE money, why not enter to some gift cards!? In this Guilt Free Energy Giveaway, Energizer is celebrating the new Energizer EcoAdvanced by giving away $1000 in gift cards! Enter to win below!
