Listen Up {Tips For Family Bible Reading + Book Review}

**Book received for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. – Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Do you have a regular family Bible reading time?

I don't mean Sundays when everyone heads off to their separate church classes, or throughout the week as you each read the Bible on your own... but an actual time set aside to read and discuss the Bible together?

With our often busy schedules, it can be hard to find the time even to grab a meal together, let along opening up our Bibles and having a good discussion on what we read. Still, there are so many benefits to doing so. It allows us to grow closer to each other and God. It gives us something positive to focus on. It allows us as parents to see what our children are learning and to better answer any questions they might have. It helps us lay a better foundation of Christian living that they can lean on as they grow older.

Sounds pretty great, right? Yet still... so many of us struggle. Maybe it's the time, maybe it's that we don't feel as though we are the best teachers, maybe our kids are just a little stubborn... or maybe we just don't even know where to begin!

Today, I'm sharing some tips to get us started.

  • Set A Time. Find a time that best fits your busy schedules and add it to the calendar. If you can do it every day, that's awesome. If only a few times a week, or even once a week will work out, go with that! Do what works for you! By keeping it on your schedule, it's less likely to fall to the side...and for those kids who like structure, it can help them better prepare for it. Having a hard time finding the time--- consider dinner time! You're already sitting around the table anyway, so make the best use of that together time!
  • Keep It Short. Kids often have a short attention span, so it doesn't need to drag on and on. Stick with a chapter or even just a few verses, especially as you're getting started.
  • Talk About It. Don't just read the Bible, but discuss it too. Ask questions, see if anything stuck out, encourage kids to ask questions. Not only will that help give them the opportunity to truly understand, but you might find you learn something from their perspective too.
  • Keep It Fun. My kids do not like being lectured to. And honestly, who does? Keep it fun with crafts, experiments and activities that are age appropriate. You can even find fun videos to help bring what you're reading to life. When you make it fun, they won't dread the time, but instead come to look forward to it.
  • Pray About It. Pray before and/or after your reading time that your children (and you) will take what they need from these Bible lessons. And if your home is as chaotic as mine often is--- pray that you can have a peaceful moment together too!

Still not quite sure where to begin? I'm excited to share a new family devotional that can help:

After teaching a parable Jesus often said, "Whoever has ears, let him hear." In other words, "This is important, so you better listen up" and what could be more important than the good news of the kingdom of God? This family devotional provides a unique opportunity for parents to help their children "listen up" and hear the gospel as Jesus himself shared it. Jesus told simple stories using everyday activities and objects that point to surprising spiritual truths about life in his kingdom. In the parables children (and adults!) will learn to treasure the gospel.

Children love stories and the parables provide a wonderful opportunity to engage their imaginations and help them understand and live out the good news of the kingdom of God. This thirteen-week family devotional is designed to help families explore the parables that Jesus taught through reading selected parables, activities, discussion questions, and "fun facts." Each five-day session includes Bible reading, discussion questions, a fun activity, and songs.

Like so many, I too have struggled to know where to begin with reading the Bible with my children. Did I start at the beginning? Stick with the beloved stories that they hear again and again in Sunday school? What questions do I ask? What exactly should they be taking away from it? This book truly has been a great starting point! Now, I must admit we are still working our way through it, but I love what I'm reading so far. It's broken into 13 weeks, with 5 days or reading each week. While the layout really serves this particular schedule very well, I'm sure you could adjust it a bit to fit your schedule if necessary... and if you miss a day, you can always pick it again.

Each week features an action word that the readings are based upon. You are given an intro to help you prepare for what is ahead. There is also a hand on activity that you can do sometime throughout the week, really bringing the lessons to life and making it more fun for kids. Each day then gives a short Bible reading--- you can read it right from the book so you're not jumping back and forth which is definitely a plus. There is then a short devotion to read aloud and think about, followed by questions to ask and discuss. One thing I love about these questions is that the correct answers (where applicable) are given right in the book and again can help give even US a better perspective on what we're reading. If you're new to the Bible or even if you're just not super comfortable in getting it 'right' this is a huge plus. Each day then ends with a prayer... these are not actually written out, but rather a prompt given on what to pray for. I love this as I feel that prayers should be personal, so while it gives us the guideline, it also encourages us to speak to God in our own words, which is what I strive to teach my children to do. Throughout the week there are also some fun facts mixed in and some 'Going Deeper' sections that allow us to go more into the lesson. Some of these might be a little more difficult for younger kids, but is a great way to personalize it for older kids/teens and even yourself so that everyone is getting a great experience from the readings.

This book truly is a must see for any parent who wants to incorporate family Bible reading into their schedules. It has thought of everything and truly makes it a stress free and educational experience for kids and parents alike. It is available to purchase now.

    You Can Stay Home With Your Kids! { A Book Review}

**Book received for consideration, post contains affiliate links. All thoughts are 100% my own.
As a mom, there is nothing that is more important to me than being able to stay home and take care of my children. While I know that is not everyone's desire and there is nothing wrong with that, it is how I always imagined motherhood would be for ME.

But let's be honest, these days it can be incredibly difficult to make it on just one income. We have so many expenses to keep up with that our grandparents (or even parents) did not have to deal with making it that much harder to make it work.

    But CAN it be done?

With a little work, effort and creativity... YES! I truly do believe that most of us can figure out a way to make it work if it's truly something we're dedicated to. It takes some effort of course, and there may be some sacrifices we have to make along the way... but doesn't everything worth doing?

Today I'm excited to share a book that can help out- You Can Stay Home With Your Kids!:

Investing your life in your family brings you joy, and doing it on a single income doesn’t need to stress you out! Join Erin Odom as she shows you how you can live frugally—and thrive—while you raise your kids at home in You Can Stay Home with Your Kids!
From the moment you discovered you were going to be a mom, you envisioned spending each day with your kids, guiding, teaching, and loving them. But diapers, wipes, shoes, and braces are expensive! Though it may feel impossible to manage on one income, Erin Odom from The Humbled Homemaker blog is here to show you that, through God’s grace, staying at home with your kids isn’t just doable; it’s doable while living the good life. Your kids are young only once—you don’t have to miss out just because money is tight.
Erin shares 100 tips, tricks, and simple ways that she has provided the good life on a budget for her family—and you can do the same!
    Sections include topics like:
making and sticking to a budget
    side income ideas
inexpensive ways to do birthday parties
educational and enrichment activities for little ones that won’t break the bank
date ideas and other ways to connect with your spouse without spending a lot
    planning for holidays
    and much more!
Experience the freedom, flexibility, and joy that come with being a hands-on mom and spending every day guiding, enjoying, and nurturing your kids, while still providing a lifestyle you can be proud of.

Though I am generally a very thrifty person and pride myself on being able to do well with a budget, but after our income was cut in half a little over a year ago, I have been on the lookout for even more ways to cut back and help keep our family afloat. I had hoped that this book would provide me with just the inspiration I'd been needing.

Now I must admit, many of these were tricks that I'd already been putting into use. I've been married for 11+ years now and have been a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom for all of those years, so I'd picked up a lot along the way. Still, there were many that I hadn't yet thought of. It featured ways to cut down on spending, ways to eat well on a budget, ways to save on necessary expenses, ways to save on the fun stuff so you can still have fun experiences, even ways to create more income on the side. Want to save by creating your own household products? There's even a section for that!

If you're new to budget living, this book is going to be a MUST. There truly are so many tips to consider incorporating into you life that are easy to do! Even for those experienced thrifty living people can learn something new too!

100 Days of Bible Journaling: Days 8-14

Week 2 of the 100 Days of Bible Promises is complete. This week I had a lot of fun playing with colors and new techniques, but mostly I loved taking in all of these beautiful scriptures. Take a look:

Day 8: Praise At All Times

It's so easy to praise God when everything is going well, but when things aren't quite going our way? Well, that gets a little bit harder. Still, the Bible reminds us to praise Him during ALL times. The good, the bad, the ugly... it all serves it's purpose in God's plan and He is faithful through it all.

For this page, I wanted lots of FUN. After all, praise should be joyful, right? I had some fun playing around with gelato backgrounds and incorporated some pieces from the Delight in His Day collection too!

    Day 9: New Beginnings

My word of the year is Renew, so the the idea of new beginnings is one that I really focusing on this year. There truly is no greater new beginning than when we begin our new life following Christ.

For this page, I really wanted to reflect that. I chose some bright spring colors (as nothing says renewal of life quite like spring) and a simple illustration to let the words speak for themselves.

Day 10: New Mercies Every Day

Continuing with the topic of NEW, I loved this reminder that EVERY day is a new day. I think so often when we set a goal for ourselves and something gets us off track, we decide 'well, that's it, I failed, I'm done'. Instead we need to remind ourselves that we start with a clean slate every day.

For this page, I felt this die cut I'd been looking for a way to uses for ages seemed very appropriate. Start every day new--- cup of coffee, some prayer time--- do it again the next day. I played off of the colors in this die cut to create a bold, beautiful background to tie it all in.

    Day 11: Freedom in Confession

When I read this devotional and thought about these verses, I thought of the lyrics, 'my chains are gone, I've been set free'... When we are burdened by our past mistakes and sins, they can weight on us and keep us from living the joyful life that God has intended for us to live.

For this page I again wanted it to reflect that joy and that freedom... so hot air balloons seemed like a perfect choice. This was a great page to practice my hand lettering on as well. You may notice that most of the lettering found on my pages is either stickers or stencils. I have issues with my hands that have impacted my handwriting and it's something I'm not very comfortable with at all, but I am working on it. Slowly.

Day 12: Wisdom For Those Who Ask

Sometimes I think we can feel like God is a little bit mysterious... something we just can't wrap our heads around. But it doesn't have to be that way... the Bible tells us that if we ask for wisdom, it will be given.

For this page, I of course had to incorporate some owls--- after all, nothing says 'wisdom' more than owls, right? Now, as I've mentioned before I am using these 100 days to experiment with some different techniques and styles. On this page, I attempted a fun gelato background and the results were not my favorite. Still, I know the point of journaling and in this challenge is NOT perfection, so while normally I might not show this page, I wanted to include it as well.

Day 13: Courage Instead of Fear

As I've said before... fear is a tough one for me. And I don't think I'm alone in that. Fear has such a way of making us believe the worst--- about ourselves, about our lives, even about the people around us. Fear tells us that we're all alone and that we should just give up. Sometimes fear can be very convincing.

For this page, I thought of the song 'Fear Is A Liar' by Zach Williams:

When he told you you're not good enough
When he told you you're not right
When he told you you're not strong enough
To put up a good fight
When he told you you're not worthy
When he told you you're not loved
When he told you you're not beautiful
    That you'll never be enough

    Fear, he is a liar
    He will take your breath
    Stop you in your steps
    Fear he is a liar
    He will rob your rest
    Steal your happiness
Cast your fear in the fire
'Cause fear he is a liar

Such a powerful song, isn't it? We've all experienced this fear to some degree or another. I wanted this page to be a very bold reminder to myself that God has this, and that all of those words that fear tells me are simply a lie. This is a page that I know I will be revisiting time and time again.

    Day 14: A Spirit-Led Life

So often we feel like we're going through life alone (there that fear is talking again), trying to live the life Christ has asked us to lead... but we were promised that we are never alone. We have the holy spirit with us always to guide us and shape our lives... we need only have to open the door.

For this page, I incorporated one of my favorite songs 'Holy Spirit'. If you have not yet experienced this amazing song, I highly suggest it. It's one of those songs that you just cannot help but close your eyes and take you over. A beautiful message for all Christians. The main idea id found in these simple words, 'Holy Spirit, you are welcome here.'

    BibleForce: The First Heroes Bible {A Book Review}

**Book received for consideration, post contains affiliate links. All thoughts are 100% my own.

When I was a kid, my parents got me a Bible... just as many parents do when they're raising their children to follow Christ. It was a simple Bible- black cover simply stating 'Holy Bible' and written in the good ol' KJV translation.  Now, I'm only 30 years old so not old by any means, but at that time, this was the pretty standard Bible for all ages. A classic. Perhaps it's that we lived in the country so the options were limited, but I do believe that there truly were just limited options available at the time.

When I became a teenager, I discovered a fun Christian bookstore about 30-40 minutes from home. There I discovered a brand new Bible that had just been released. I don't recall the name of this Bible, but it was styled like a magazine, geared towards teen girls. I LOVED magazines. Okay, I still love magazines. The fun articles, the quizzes, the great images... everything. Naturally my teenage self was drawn to these Bibles. I think that is truly where my love of Bibles began--- finding that perfect Bible that appealed to what I enjoyed. It allowed me to see that it WAS relevant and that it was something I could enjoy.

We all need that, don't we? Back then for me that was my magazine styled Bible. For many today, they find that in journaling Bibles or coloring Bibles. Still some find it in devotionals geared toward where they are in their lives right now- military life, motherhood, homeschooling--- there are bibles for all of these.

Today I'm excited to introduce you to a new Bible storybook that is perfect for those who love comics books and superheroes: BibleForce.

Dive into the action and adventure of the Bible! BibleForce will help you and your children discover the message of the Bible and the heroes within its pages. The focus on Bible heroes makes the stories even more thrilling.

This beautifully illustrated Bible is retold in a visually enticing, fast-paced narrative that is sure to capture your attention. BibleForce follows the events of the Bible in chronological order and shares nearly 200 stories of Scripture in a simple, straightforward retelling.

BibleForce is a great book to be read together and is simple enough for young readers to read on their own. Kids will be enthralled in the thrilling drama of the Bible and the visually engaging detail of the illustrations—they won’t be able to put down this exciting book.

Jump into the story of God’s Word and the amazing heroes within its pages.

If you know your Bible styles, you will likely know that this is not the first Bible inspired comic book/graphic novel. In fact, others such as The Action Bible have been around for several years now. We have this one in our collection, and while my son at 10.5 years old DOES enjoy it, I always felt that it was really for more of an older audience. This is not to say there was anything bad or inappropriate about it at all--- just that they style seemed to lend itself more towards teenagers and yes, even adults. The illustrations darker, more intricate, etc.

BibleForce in my opinion seems to be better for this age group. The illustrations are still every bit as stunning and action packed but seem to be brighter, bolder... just what my son loves. It's easy enough for even fairly young readers to read without help as well, which is a huge plus in my book. It allows kids of all ages to see the heroes in the Bible--- the real life heroes--- in the same way that they love seeing their favorite comic book heroes... pretty great, right?

One thing that I really loved about this Bible storybook is that it goes in chronological order, helping us to gain a better understanding of what it is we're reading. I think this is important at any age, but especially for kids who are truly just learning about the Bible. While BibleForce should never be a replacement for an actual Bible, it is truly a great way to encourage kids to fall in love and realize just how great the stories inside truly are!

If you have a kid who loves superheroes or comics, this is one that is certainly worth checking out! It is available to purchase now at your favorite Christian book retailers.

Like Arrows: A Must See for Parents Coming To Theaters Soon

Do you ever feel like perhaps you're just not doing so great at this parenting thing?

Honest truth: I feel like this often.

I was a young mom, turning 20-years-old just weeks after welcoming my first child. Being the first among my core group of friends to be married and start a family, I truly had to learn it all on my own along the way. But let's be honest, now at thirty with an 10.5 and 4.5 year old... I still feel like I'm learning as I go. I try my best to put my children first and to make the decisions I feel are best for them at that time... but I'm far from perfect. I make mistakes more often than I'd truly like to admit.

I think oftentimes parenting, especially as a first time parent, is just that... learning as we grow. It's HARD. Sometimes we don't get it right, and we just have to learn and move forward from that. But as time goes by, I find myself wondering if I ever am going to get it, or if it's too late to be the kind of parent that I'd always hoped to be.

Does this sound like you? If so, I have a new movie to introduce to you that may just help, Like Arrows:

When conflict, rebellion, and resentment overwhelm their family, Charlie and Alice are forced to rethink their parenting strategy. In the process, they realize how critical intentionality and focus are when shaping and molding young lives. FamilyLife’s first feature film explores the challenges and joys that come with raising children. Through a journey that unfolds over 50 years, Charlie and Alice discover the unmistakable power of family. Together, they learn that knowing and living by God’s Word is what brings transformation and hope to any family.

If you're looking for a glossed over, parenting through rose colored glasses movie--- well, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a movie that is real and honest... a movie that reminds you that none of us are perfect... this is just the movie to watch. It very beautifully shows us the realities of parenting. And the reality is this--- it's not easy. Kids don't come with a handbook, and while there are certainly many books on the market that claim to be just that, they're all telling us different things. One book says do this. The others says, 'No, that book was wrong, don't do that'. What are we supposed to believe? But this movie serves as a reminder that the best parenting book out there is one that we mostly already have--- the Bible. It is packed full of verses and life lessons to be applied to our parenting journey.

What I loved about this movie is that it did show the imperfection. It took our main characters Charlie and Alice many years to reach this turning point in their lives and their parenting journey to realize that something had to change and they had to live more intentionally. Now, I don't know about you... but I find change hard. Sometimes we get so stuck in this pattern that we just feel like it's too late... our kids won't take the change and well... it's just too late. While this is of course a fictional tale, it does show that it is never too late to turn it over to God and change focus. Is it easy? No. But it's worth it.

This movie takes place over the course of 50 years, jumping a few years here and there throughout the story. While at times I do wish I could have enjoyed seeing more during each of these phases... well, that's parenting isn't it? You blink and another 4 years have passed us by. But by creating the movie this way, it allows us to see the impact of our parenting throughout the years.

If you're struggling with parenting intentionally or are a new parent and feeling like you just don't know where to begin, I highly suggest checking out this movie. It has a powerful message that I truly believe all parents can benefit from. Check out this great video from FamilyLife to learn more about their fantastic Art of Parenting resources. And be sure to follow along on Twitter too.

Want to experience the movie for yourself? It will be available in select theaters around the country on May 1 & 3 ONLY! Visit here to find a showing in your area.

    Cloth Diapering Myths: Debunked

Making the decision to cloth diaper can be quite exciting. You do research, you find all the cute diaper options available and you are ready and willing to get started. Then you start telling people your plans. Immediately it seems, someone has something negative to say. "Why would you use cloth? It's inconvenient/gross/expensive. Your baby will have rashes. You'll pay more in water bills. They still DO that!?" I'm sure many of us have heard one or all of these comments, right? The funny thing...most are coming from people who have absolutely no cloth diapering experience! So, don't get discouraged...take a look at these common cloth diapering myths, debunked!

The Myth: It's soooo much work.
The Reality: Okay, sure, in some ways cloth diapering might be a little more work. If you use pockets you'll have to stuff (easy!), you'll have an extra load or two of laundry, and maybe have to put them away once in awhile (though I'll admit I'm guilty of grabbing straight from the basket...). But you know what else is hard work? Getting little ones dressed and ready, loading them into the carseats, trying to leave the store without a basket of toys you don't need...for those inevitable trips when you run out of diapers! Both require different kinds of work, but personally I prefer the kind of work I can do in my jammies! As for the diapers themselves, there may be a small learning curve but if my seven year old son can put a diaper on his baby sister, ANYONE can do it! And if there's concern about pins and baby getting poked? Well, just show them a modern cloth diaper. No pins required.

The Myth: Your baby WILL get rashes.
The Reality: Cloth diapers or not, some babies are just prone to diaper rashes. Some babies DO have sensitivities to certain cloth diaper materials just as some babies have sensitivities to disposable diapers. But just because a baby uses cloth does not mean they will have rashes. My daughter has extremely sensitive skin...look at her funny and she gets a rash. BUT she's been in cloth since the beginning and has never had troubles with rashes!

The Myth: They leak. All the time.
The Reality: The great thing about cloth diapers is that you can usually adjust the absorbency to fit your child's needs. Some diapers may be prone to compression leaks if baby will be sitting a lot- switch to a different insert and you're set! Aside from that, if you find the diapers that provide a good fit for your little one and change as often as necessary, leaks should not be a problem!

The Myth: You'll be doing laundry all the time. Your water bill will skyrocket.
The Reality: Depending on your washer and wash routine, then you may see a slight increase in your water usage but in my experience personally, it's very minimal. I've compared our personal water usage to the same time period before we were using cloth and have found it stayed fairly constant. In fact, there were some months we used even less. Besides that, have you ever found a disposable diaper that can contain an exclusively breastfed blowout diaper? When my son was in disposable, we could not...and we tried them all. I was doing just as much laundry (and cleaning just as much poop) as we do using cloth!

    The Myth: It's too expensive.
The Reality: It's no secret that cloth diapering is the cheaper option in the long run, but there's also no denying the startup cost is much heftier as well. Still, there are many ways to make cloth diapering fit any budget. From using prefolds and covers, entering blog giveaways, buying used or buying slowly before baby's arrival. Cloth diapering on a budget IS doable.

    The Myth: It's Gross.
The Reality: Well, to be honest I'm not quite sure how to respond to this one...why is it so gross? Oh sure, there's the poop. And the pee. But did you see my above story about the blowouts in disposable? Chances are as parents, we are going to get peed and pooped on whether or not we use cloth anyway. Is it the washing that's gross? Do you toss out every pair of undies your child has an accident on while potty training? Or every outfit that gets soiled? I'm guessing not! They are perfectly clean after each wash...nothing gross about that!! Being a parent is all about the gross!

The Myth: You can't use cloth while travelling.
The Reality: You may find you prefer not to use cloth while on the go out of convenience, but if you choose to use cloth full time, it's certainly doable. Pack a few extra diapers and a wet bag or two and you're ready to go. If baby will be sitting awhile (carseat or stroller) consider absorbency options other than microfiber to avoid compression leaks. We travel to visit family quite often, and while our diapers may take up more space, we've never had any problems using them on the road! But again, you can also use disposable OR hybrid options as well! The possibilities are endless!

What cloth diaper myths have YOU heard?

Finding the Perfect Unique Mother's Day Gift {+ The Perfect Gift for the Grown Up Hello Kitty Fan!} #Deal

**This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Hello Kitty Wines. All thoughts are 100% my own.

Mother's Day is just weeks away! Have you started thinking about what to get the mother in your life?

Being a mother is such an important role to take on that we truly want to make sure we find just the perfect gift to show our love and appreciation... the gift that will make her smile. The gift that will let her know that you truly thought of her and wanted to find the perfect gift for HER.

But how do we do that?

Here are a few things to consider:

    • What does she NEED?
Now, some might argue that gifts shouldn't be needs, and perhaps there is some truth to that... depending on the mom. Me? I take of everyone else's needs before my own, so having someone else take care of those needs? Awesome.
    • What does she WANT?
Has there been something that she's mentioned wanting? That is naturally a great place to start! She might not come right out and say it, but listen for hints! You can even come out and ask, if she's the kind to actually answer.
    • What does she LOVE?
Us moms have our hobbies too. Maybe it crafting, maybe its working out, maybe its curling up with a good book and a glass of wine/cup of coffee. We also have our fandoms... yes, some of us are even a little nerdy about it. Whether it's a favorite TV show, movie or character... find something that incorporates all of these loves into one ultimate gift!

Raising Greener Kids: Tips & Tricks To Celebrate Earth Day

Some days it seems like we live in a world of disposables, doesn't it? Everything is designed to be the most convenient, easiest, cheapest...from diapers, to tablewear...even our furniture isn't made to last like in years passed. So, in this world of disposables, how do we raise our children to live a more green life? Here are a few quick and easy tips to get you started:

    Recycle, Reduce, Reuse.

Recycling- yes, that's simple enough...but for kids make it more fun! Keep a box of items like cereal boxes, toilet paper/paper towel rolls, etc that can be used for fun projects later. Not only does it serve as a great lesson in recycling, it's also a fun way to inspire creativity! A few of my son's recycled creations: Lego portals and telescopes from toilet paper rolls!!

    Grow a Garden.

In a world of processed, convenience foods, teaching your children where their food comes from is an important lesson to be learned. Planting a garden is a great way to teach them. Make it fun by allowing them to choose a few of their favorites to plant or picking out their own kid-friendly gardening tools. Don't have the space? Try a small windowsill herb garden or hanging tomato plants. It doesn't have to be huge. In fact, this year we only successfully grew tomatoes- but my son still loved going out and picking the food that he helped grow!

    Buy Green/Healthy Food Options.

Given the choice between an apple and a cookie, most kids are going to go for the cookie, right?  Rather than packaged foods high in sugar, stock your home with healthy snack options like fresh fruits and veggies! Rather than chicken nuggets, offer them chicken breast! If you introduce your children and give them healthier options at a young age, they learn to appreciate those healthy, tasty treats and make better food choices.

    Buy It Used.

Thrift shopping might not be the first thing of when talking about going green, but it makes sense. When you buy used, you have less packaging, meaning less waste. You are giving those items that may otherwise end up in a landfill a second life. Personally, I also find this a great way to teach your children the value of their money and to not put their value in material things. We may not be able to buy everything used, but we try to do what we can.

    Lead By Example.

Perhaps the single most influential thing we can do to teach our children to lead more green lifestyles is to lead by example. I know I can personally TELL my son something 10 times and it goes in one ear and right out the other. Lecturing about living green? It's likely to be the same. Instead, by making efforts to live more green myself, my hope is that both of my children will pick up on these things and carry them on in their own lives.

Best Foods To Buy To Stretch Your Budget

    Background image created by Topntp26 - Freepik.com

Whether it's an unexpected emergency expense, loss of income or ongoing struggles to get ahead--- many of us will at one time or another find our pantries getting as empty as our bank accounts! There's always the 'ramen diet' to fall back on... but we all want something a little more substantial and better for us, right? Today,I am sharing some inexpensive foods for when we really need--- or want-- to pinch those pennies.
    • Beans. Beans can be a great source of protein and are very inexpensive. Bagged beans are generally cheaper than your canned beans, but do take a little more work. Not only can these be used as a meat substitute, they can also be added in to help stretch your meat-- and therefore your budget--- much further.
    • Oats (Plain). Now if you start looking into instant oatmeal flavored packets, you'll find your costs rising, but a basic oat is generally very inexpensive and has many uses. It's a great breakfast food that can be personalized to your tastes, but serves many other purposes in the kitchen as well- baking, breading meat, even meatloaf to again help stretch that meat! They are high in fiber and keep you feeling full longer. In addition, oats can be used in many homemade beauty treatments saving you money not just on food, but on your self care routine too.
    • Eggs. There is so much that can be done with eggs, isn't there!? Scrambled up with some fresh veggies, on a sandwich, hard boiled, egg salad, fried over potatoes and onions... the options are limitless! Eggs are generally very inexpensive, and can be a great source of protein too!
    • Bananas. When it comes to fruit, nothing can quite beat the price of bananas! And what kiddo doesn't love bananas anyway! Eat them on their own, or take your PB sandwich to the next level and add them in!
    • Potatoes. Another great versatile and inexpensive food--- potatoes! Fried, mashed, baked, homemade fries, in a soup, you name it! They can be quite filling and the perfect inexpensive side to any meal. I like to create one skillet meals with veggies and meat... always a hit!
    • Frozen Vegetables. Now, we all know that canned veggies are generally cheaper, BUT frozen don't cost too much more (depending on brands and where you shop, they can actually be about the same or cheaper) and are healthier too!
    • Rice. Rice is very inexpensive and a great source of fiber. It is ideal for bulking up meals, in casseroles, soups, as a side, etc... it's also a great inexpensive breakfast, just add in a hint of sugar and cinnamon! Yum!
    • Green Onions. Not only do these add a flavorful topping to baked potatoes, soups, etc... they are also very inexpensive. A bundle is generally less than $1 in my area! Not only that, but when you use what you need, you can place them in water and it will actually regrow, so you can always have some on hand without the need to buy over and over!
    • Peanut Butter. (Almost) every kid loves peanut butter, right? It's very inexpensive so PB sandwiches are a great, thrifty lunch options, but it's ideal for snacking too--- throw it on some saltines or on some celery for a nice protein filled snack.
    • Celery. Celery is a very inexpensive vegetable option. It's great in a roast or soup, but in our home, it's mostly for snacking. Peanut butter or ranch dressing... my family loves it either way!
    • Popcorn. Speaking of snacks, when you skip the bagged and super buttered versions, it can actually be a very budget friendly and healthy treat. A bag of kernels generally costs $1-3 and lasts for a long while.Simply pop over the stove top with a little bit of oil. (Popcorn oil might give it a little more flavor, BUT can be pricier... we simply use our regular cooking oil and shake some salt on after!)

These are just a few of the great foods that can help stretch your budget when you're running out of pennies to pinch. What are your favorite budget friendly foods?

Stay tuned for more great tips to stretch your grocery budget!

For The Kid Who Loves Gross: Introducing Zits (EWWW!) + A Giveaway

**This is a sponsored post written my me on behalf of Zits (EWWW!). All thoughts are 100% my own.

    10-year-old boys are gross.

Now, now... I'm not trying to start anything here... nor was my blog hacked by a 10-year-old girl... but let's be real--- as a mom to a said 10 year old boy... they like gross things. The grosser, the better. Honestly, from fake vomit to fake dog poop, my boy goes crazy for it all.A good ol' fart joke? Oh boy... watch out!

So, when I heard of a brand new game that takes the grossness to a whole new level, I just knew it was right up his alley.

    Introducing Zits (EWWW!):

First came the whoopie cushion, then stink bombs, fake vomit, slime and poop emoji toys.  Now New York City’s NSI International, Inc. is taking “gross” to a whole new level. Introducing ZitsTM (EWWW!) pop n’ play pimples. Just press them on, squeeze ‘em, and gross out everyone!
Zits pop n’ play pimples aim to move to the “whitehead” of the pack, disrupting a potty-crazed toy market that has brought kids everything from cuddly plush poop to electronic fart blasters. Now, Landi says, “It’s the pimple’s time to shine.” “With slime hotter than ever, we thought it was the perfect time to create the ultimate toy mash-up – adding some play compound to the thrill of pimple popping and the satisfaction of popping bubble wrap,” Landi says. “The result is the most disgustingly amazing toy ever.”

Can I get an EWWW!? But let's be honest--- we all have that one person in our lives that is fascinated with pimple popping, am I right? Hey, maybe it's even you... no judgement! There's even this strange internet fascination on the subject creating this craze of videos showing just that! One dermatologist, dubbed “Dr. Pimple Popper,” has 3.2 million YouTube subscribers and almost 1,000 videos, with a staggering 2 billion views. Say what!? All that for popping pimples!?

I suppose it only makes sense to bring the fun to life--- no real pimples necessary! And Zits does just that! My son- gross loving kid that he is- could not wait to try them out. How do they work? Simply peel off the backing, stick them on, and letting the popping begin! The slime oozes out and the laughter begins!

The good news for moms? Zits pop n play pimples are safe and non-toxic so even if you don't understand WHY the love them, you can at least feel comfortable allowing them to play safely. They come in variety of sizes and are being sold in a massive pack of 100 for $19.99 at IGotZits.com.

They will also be coming this March to Walmart and other major retailers and will be sold in packages of 25, with an MSRP of $4.99.

Want to try them out before you buy? One lucky winner can do just that! Enter using the Rafflecopter form below:

Journaling 100 Days of Bible Promises: Days 1-7

I am currently journaling through a great new journal from Illustrated Faith creator, Shanna Noel. Each day offers a new promise and room to journal though I am personally doing the journaling in my Bible, as I would love to revisit again in years to come if needed. As I work through these days, I am excited to share my experience with all of you! I am using these 100 days to get out of my creative rut and try new techniques and styles that I might not have before so through these days you might notice that.

    Here are Days 1-7:

Day 1: His Grace is Sufficient

People often tell me I'm strong, and I must admit...I don't often feel it. More often that not, I feel like I'm failing at just about everything. Maybe that's the perfectionist in me. Through the chronic pain, the mental health issues, etc... many days I just feel like breaking down. Some days I do. (Okay, many days.) It is only through the grace of God that I can get back up and keep pushing forward. In my own weaknesses, He shines through. He gets me through it, one day at a time.

For this page, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I'm not much of an artist so I often stick to very simple pages with bright backgrounds and stickers or die cuts rather than drawing. But I felt that this journaling challenge should be about stepping out of that comfort zone. While it's certainly not perfect, I am very happy with the outcome. Even more so, I love this message- Though I am weak, He is strong!

    Day 2: Don't Be Afraid.

This is a message that I have to remind myself each and every day. The Bible talks a lot about not being afraid, but I think it's something that many of us struggle with. I love this reminder that God is with us, we have no reason to fear. Does it stop the fear from creeping in? Not always, but it helps to keep it in check most days!

For this page, I'm a big fan of the Chris Tomlin song, 'Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)' based on Psalm 27:1 so I incorporated that into my day two journaling. If you have not heard this song, I highly recommend giving it a listen. I kept the page pretty simple but had some fun with clear cut letters, another new one for me! I did have some issues with my stencil so my background wasn't as crisp as I'd have liked, but... that's where I'm having to let go of my fear of imperfection and just go with it!

Day 3: Nothing Is Too Difficult For God

I often find myself feeling very overwhelmed. Honestly, I truly often feel like that weight of the world is on my shoulders and I have to figure it all out on my own. More than often, I find myself feel like I'm failing at most of it. This is a reminder that I need daily... I am not alone and God is more than enough to handle everything I am going through.

For this page, I kept it pretty simple. I loved this 'Hey Girl Hey' die cut from one of the recent Illustrated Faith collections, and wanted it to draw attention to those next word's... God's Got This. With Him, we truly can do and overcome the impossible.

    Day 4: Be Still
Stillness is hard to find these days. More often than not, I would in fact say that my life and my home is... well, complete and total chaos. Be still!? I'm not sure I even know what that means sometimes. Still in the midst of all that crazy--- or maybe because of it--- I do need to find those moments of peace, however fleeting to remember that God is still here.

This is one of those pages where I tried something new with the lettering and background, and wasn't 100% happy with the results. Not my best work, but that's just part of the challenge, right? I did love the way the tip in on the opposite page turned out, and left myself plenty of room to come back and journal more thoughts on the subject.

Day 5: Your Desires, God's Purpose

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Now that doesn't mean He is going to give you absolutely everything you want... but perhaps He will work on our hearts and our desires will be more closely aligned with His purpose for us.

For this page, I really wanted it to reflect that idea of DELIGHT with bright colors and bold images. I must admit when I started this page I had a different idea in mind--- cotton candy and ice cream (part of the Delight in His Day Collection from Illustrated Faith), but as I worked I found that I really just wanted those old beautiful colors to speak for themselves. This is one of my favorite pages so far.

    Day 6: Don't Worry

I must admit--- I'm a worry-er. This is something I struggle with every single day. I think as moms and women by nature we tend to worry to some degree--- add in anxiety issues... oh boy! I worry about everything! The verses in this particular devotion are all go tos for me when I start to feel it creeping in. I need those reminders daily, and multiple times a day... but thankfully I have many great verses to turn to and to pray on.

For this page, I just couldn't resist bringing in the Disney. This is not the first Disney-inspired journaling page I have created (I've also done pages inspired by Brave, Inside Out and Frozen), but is most certainly my favorite so far! The Lion King is my absolute favorite movie of all time, so naturally when I think of not worrying, Hakuna Matata came right to mind.

Day 7: Steadfast In Your Work

Sometimes it can be easy to feel like the work you do doesn't matter. Whether it's being a mom, a blogger or a typical 9 to 5 job... we don't often get the thanks we deserve. Or perhaps we just don't see how God can use us in the positions we're in. That can be discouraging. But if we use whatever we do--- from doing the laundry to running a company--- to bring the glory to God, that work is not wasted! This is something I strive to do in my writing, but as I worked through these verses I realized something I should try to be more intentional about doing in my work around the home as well.

For this page, I really focused on that role as a writer/blogger. I feel like this is a passion that God has put on my heart long before I was even able to put the words to paper, and my prayer is that he will use that for His goodness. The page on the right is again another tip in which actually features the prayer from the journal for a better reminder as I flip through my Bible.

After finishing week one, I am absolutely loving working through this journal. It has been a great motivation to get my Bible out and create more... but has also been great reminders daily of these amazing promises God has given us.

If you'd like to join me on the journey, check your local Lifeway stores or order online. This is a great way to get started in Bible journaling (with no need for an actual journaling Bible since you can do so right in the journal), or if you're like me and just need some extra inspiration, it's been amazing for that too. Stay tuned for more as I continue to work through this journal myself.

    Give Your House a Fresh Look with Lighting From PureOptics LED {+ A Coupon Code}

**This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of PureOptics LED. All thoughts are 100% my own.

Do you ever just get in a mood to redo your home? I know I do. I'm constantly moving things around and trying to make little improvements here and there to better fit my needs. I want to always be falling more in love with whatever house I'm living in.

Still, as renters, there is only so much we can do. I can't be tearing down walls, painting or doing a complete kitchen renovation. I have to be a little more creative with my home renewal projects. Thankfully, I've learned a few ways over the year to revamp the home without any lasting changes or breaking the bank. Today, I'm sharing my top 3:

    Give It A New Layout.
We may not be able to redo the floor plan of the house, but we can move the furniture! Try swapping out pieces from different rooms to give a new look without spending a dime.

    Change the Textiles.
Throws, pillow covers, curtains, rugs.. these can make a huge difference in a room and can be done at most budgets too. If you really want to go all out, you can even reupholster your old furniture!

    Adjust the Lighting.
If there is one thing that can make a HUGE difference in a home, it's the lighting! It can make a room feel brighter and bigger... where a dark room can make it feel small and cramped. It creates the atmosphere we want to create. While we might not be able to change out the existing overhead lighting in a rental home--- we can supplement that lighting.

One of the least favorite rooms in my current rental home is my kitchen. It's not the smallest kitchen I've had by any means, but it has two big downfalls. It has very limited storage space, and the lighting is AWFUL. It features one small overhead light and a small window that provides minimal extra lighting. During the evening, we usually have to turn a light on in the adjoining room to see to do anything. Add in some old school wood paneled walls, and it's a dark and slightly depressing room. It needed new life!

    Enter Pure Optics LED:

Under Cabinet Lighting by PureOptics LED is a collection of sleek, linear light bars that provides maximum illumination at a minimum footprint. Lightweight and ranging from 9” to 24” in length, each compact bar can be installed free of tools or hardwiring, allowing for inimitable illumination using one or several linked light bars, practically anywhere. Boasting ten dimmable brightness levels and a motion sensor for remarkable hands-free use, this line of powerful, high lumen lighting offers unparalleled convenience in kitchens, bathrooms and more. Available in three color temperatures: natural daylight, cool white and warm white.

I was recently sent a 5-Bar Tool-Free LED Under Cabinet Lighting Kit to try out for myself. Now, I must admit, despite being a carpenter's daughter, my house renovation skills are very minimal... I can use a drill and a hammer, but had never really had the opportunity to do much else. The great thing about this set is there truly is no experience required. Each kit includes 5 light bars and everything you need to install.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Start by cleaning the cabinets. Kitchen cabinets can get extremely greasy--- especially those underneath areas that we don't pay much mind too. I started by giving them a thorough wash down with dish soap and water. This allows the lights to stick on much better.
    2. Next up, I planned out my lighting. They require a plug in so I figure out the best layout to hide the cords, and how to place each light. It includes connecting cords of different lengths so you can play around with placement to figure out what layout works best, there is no particular order the lights needs to be in.Two of the 5 bars have an on/off button, so keep that in mind and decide where those would make the most sense in your kitchen. I found it made the most sense to have them at each end of the lighting for easy access. There is also a a motion sensor box that allows you to turn the lights on or off hands free, so consider the best use of that too (I found near the sink to be best!)
    3. If you need to drill, do so now. Because these are connected by wires, you may find that you want to drill some holes in the cabinets where they meet to hide them a bit. Because we rent, we were unable to do so, but minimized wires showing with the included wire clips.
    4. Slide the mounting clips onto the light bar. They fit perfectly into the grooves on the light bar for easy installation. I used two clips per light bar.

    5. Peel and stick. Each mounting clip features an adhesive backing, so simply remove the covering and stick. Use the handy included guide to help on even installation. Prefer to screw it in? You can do that too, but again as renters, I like that this is less permanent.
    6. Adjust your wires.Once you finish, use the include wire clips (also with adhesive backings) to clean up any loose wires.

And that's it.. super easy, right? All in all, this project took under an hour from start to finish and the results? Fantastic! It gave me more light to work, and truly just made the room feel bigger and brighter! Oh what a difference lighting can make!

Aside from the ease of use, I also love that this product is completely customizable. I decide where everything goes, how many lights to use, where to put them, etc. While the five lights were perfect for my kitchen needs, you can also purchase individual bars, cords, mounts, etc... to extend the project further. This is again great as a renter, because when it comes time for our next home, I can add more bars or take them away as needed. And I can buy new clips to hang them for a great price!

If you're looking for a great way to update your kitchen, bathroom or ANY room with minimal work and expense... these lights can be just what you need! And right now you can save 20% off 5-Bar Under Cabinet Lighting Kits at PureOptics LED when you use the code 20OFFLED! Head on over to take advantage of these savings now!

How would you renew your home with these lights? Under the cabinets? Brighten up a closet? Display a collection? The options are limitless! Let me hear your ideas in the comments below.
