Give the Gift of #FinancialPeace with @CapitalOne360 Black Friday {#CleverGirls}

Do you have an emergency savings fund?

I'll be honest, we haven't always, and I always worried about what we would do if something were to go wrong- an issue in my husband's pay, car troubles, unforeseen travel expenses- there were so many things that could easily break us. Over the past few years, we really decided to do everything we could to put money back...and boy was I glad we did!

As most of you know, my husband got out of the military at the end of September rather unexpectedly. With no job lined up and the typical delay in final pay, we really could have been in trouble...especially with our rent due just one day later! While we by no meand had a hefty savings, we at least had managed to save enough that we were able to pay our bills, put food on the table and stress a little less during that waiting period. In that moment, I could not have been happier to have had that emergency fund!

Want to start your own? Here are a few quick tips to get you started:

  • Set a schedule. For us, we decided to move a set amount over to our savings with each paycheck (twice a month). If your budget is a little tighter, perhaps once a month would be a better fit. If possible, set up an automatic transfer so they money goes over as soon as you're paid and you won't miss it!
  • Pay what you can. Whether it's $200, $75, or even $25...do what fits into YOUR budget! Of course the more you can put back the better, but only you know what makes sense for you.
  • Extra, unexpected cash? Save it! Perhaps you got a bonus at work, sold some old items at a yard sale...or even won a little extra cash...if you have money coming in that you weren't expecting and budgeting for, you'll never miss it!
  • Cut back on unnecessary spending. For many of us, if we really looked at our spending habits, there are probably a few places we could cut back...perhaps eating out less, cutting back on expensive coffees, etc. You don't have to eliminate ALL your splurges, but if you can find an area or two to cut back, this extra bit you are saving can be a great starting point for your emergency fund!
  • Out of sight, out of mind. I have found in our household, if we know the money is there, the temptation to spend it is there as well...so once you start saving, TRY not to pay too much attention to the amount in your account. If you need it, it's there, but try not to use it unless it's truly an emergency!!
Starting an emergency fund when you're already on a tight budget can seem like an impossibility, but the first step is deciding to do so...once you start it will become second nature and trust me when I say you will always be glad to have it!

At this time of the year, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and lose sight of these financial goals we've set. But this holiday, Capital One 360 wants to encourage you to stay on track and is decking the halls with deals you can bank on, including new account bonuses, referral bonuses and closing cost credits! How I'm Saving on My Holiday Shopping with FreeShipping.com! #LoveFreeShipping #CleverGirls

It's that time of year again! Christmas shopping time!! I absolutely, positively love Christmas shopping! I just love finding the perfect gift for everyone on my holiday list! But I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of facing the holiday crowds in store! (Assuming I can even find time to shop without the kids that is!) So, I've found shopping online is a great option for us. I can stay in where it's nice and warm shop while the little ones are sleeping or at school...and the gifts just show up right on my doorstep! Sounds like a great way to shop, right? There's just one little problem...

It's amazing how quickly shipping costs can add up, isn't it? And when you're on a tight holiday budget, you don't want to waste any of it on shipping!! So, this year I found the perfect solution to make my online holiday shopping a little more budget-friendly...FreeShipping.com, which allows members to earn back 10% of their purchases at over 1000 top retailers like Walmart, Kohls, Nordstrom, Best Buy and more!! Plus, members receive free shipping, free returns and price protection too!

So, how does FreeShipping.com work? And how has it saved me money on my Christmas shopping? Let's take a look:

  • How It Works. Shopping through FreeShipping.com is super simple! Members simply login, click on any participating retailer's offer and then shop as you normally would!
  • 10% Cash Back. Once the retailer has notified FreeShipping that your order has shipped, they'll apply 10% of total purchase to your Savings Center account! At the end of every quarter, they'll tally up your cashback earnings from the previous 3 months and send you a check for the total! Just by clicking on your retailer's website through FreeShipping.com, you've already saved 10%!! But the savings don't stop there!

  • Compare Prices: The site features a handy search tool that instantly compares the price of millions of items to show you where to get the best possible deal!

  • Coupon Codes. They offer member-exclusive coupon codes for free shipping and other great discounts that can be used at checkout! Using these coupons you can save even MORE than 10%!!
  • Shipping Rebates. Order didn't qualify for the free shipping codes? No problem! FreeShipping.com offers shipping rebates anytime you are charged shipping on orders made through their website! I've found personally I do small purchases from several different sites, which don't meet the free shipping requirements, so this is a huge plus for me!! I don't feel like I need to spend more there than I need, I just submit the rebate!! Easy!

    • Return Shipping Rebates. Need to return an item? No matter the reason, FreeShipping.com will cover it! Whew!
    • Price Protection. Have you ever bought something only to discover it went on sale just days after? Me too! annoying, isn't it? But with FreeShipping, if you find an item you purchased for a lower advertised price within 90 days of your purchase, they'll pay you the difference! Awesome!

Sounds pretty great doesn't it? I've been personally using FreeShipping.com for my online Holiday shopping this year and loving the results. So far between shipping rebates and 10% cash back, I'm looking at getting back nearly $40!! And I'm just getting started! With so many stores to choose from, I can do nearly all my holiday shopping through them! Now, I cannot show you exactly what I've purchased (in case any snooping husband or kiddo oversees!), but I can tell I've gotten some pretty awesome gifts at some pretty awesome prices. I feel confident that I am getting the absolute best deals while still giving my family a wonderful holiday!

With their 10% cash-back offer, FreeShipping.com members already receive a bigger discount on online purchases than other subscription program offers, but from Black Friday to Cyber Monday the savings are going up!! Each day from November 28-December 1, they'll be offering 20% cash back at five different retailers per day!! Participating retailers include Walmart, QVC, Sears, Children's Place, Gap and Nordstrom!! If you're looking for another great reason to avoid the Black Friday crowds, this is IT!

Ready to start saving? Great news...use the coupon code HOLIDAY2014 on FreeShipping.com to begin your FREE 30-day trial and receive a discounted monthly membership rate of $9.95/month after the trial is over! What are you waiting for? Start saving today!

What would YOU shop for through FreeShipping.com?

    Finley Grace, 15 Months.

Last week, my little princess turned 15 months old! Where oh where has the time gone!? While I love this age of learning and discovering, I cannot help but wonder where the baby stage went and how she could possibly be this old already! Does the time always go faster with the second baby? Hmmm...

Here is a look at what Miss Finley has been learning this month:

    • She's still wearing 24 month clothing! 18 months are pretty well entirely outgrown now!
    • She's loving food more and more, but due to her horrible eczema cannot eat anything with gluten! No fun! Fresh fruits and veggies are a staple. She is also still crazy about black beans!
    • Her vocabulary is growing each and every day. In addition to those she'd pick up until this point (Mommy, Daddy Bubby, Minnie, Nanana/Frozen, Disney nini/nose, eye, hi, bye, mimi/milk, baby, bebe/belly button...among others). She keeps adding more words like: Sa (Elsa), teeth, dipey, mine, apple, butt (thanks to Bubby!), the list goes on. She loves saying 'this'...her way of asking 'What's this?' while pointing to something, and will often attempt to repeat answers.
    • She's very smart and picks up on things quickly. She knows the bus means bubby is home. She knows if I am talking to my mom on the phone and say 'I love you' the next words out of my mouth will be 'bye' and will beat me to it! She is VERY close to figuring out how to put a DVD in the DVD player (though at this point is mostly sliding it UNDER the player, but she has the idea in theory). She'll grab the keys and head for the door if she wants to go bye. Perhaps the cutest of all is her standing in the corner...if big brother gets told to stand in the corner, she will happily oblige...if only bubby was such a good listener!
    • She loves her big brother more than anything. If he is sad, she will snuggle up to him and give him a kiss. She actually isn't much for giving kisses usually, but ALWAYS has some to spare for bubby. She already seems very protective of him...unless she's the one pestering him of course!
    • She is all about Minnie Mouse lately!! It's right up there with Frozen! I'm not sure where this obsession came from- she's actually only watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse a handful of times- but she goes crazy!! She helps pick out her own clothes most days and always requests Minnie Mouse! Adorable!
    • She loves 'helping' me clean! You know how some babies are afraid of the vacuum? Not my girl, she wants to push it! She's always stealing my broom too! Of course, she's always been fascinated with laundry. I am personally hoping she keeps up with this trend! I could use a little helper!
    • She loves anything girly! Pretty bows, necklaces, frilly dresses...she wants them all!
    • She thinks she's a big kid...At Cub Scout meetings, etc she wants to be doing just what the other kids are doing!
    • She's working on THREE new teeth! She'll have a mouthful soon! She loves showing them off and letting everyone know she has 'teef!'.
    • She's a climber! If there is a way to climb something, she WILL find it! She loves to be all over the place, keeping mommy running!!
Overall, Finley is still a sweet, happy little girl and we could not love her more! It's amazing to see her learn all these new things and I am enjoying every minute!! I cannot wait to see what new experiences the next month brings!!

    Bring Home the Magic of the North Pole with Hallmark {#NorthpoleFun #shop}

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.#NorthpoleFun #CollectiveBias

"It's the most wonderful time of the year..." I don't know about all of you, but this has certainly been the sentiment echoing around my home over the past few weeks. We absolutely, positively love Christmas. Wait, no that's not it...love isn't strong enough. We're obsessed. We live and BREATHE Christmas from November through the New Year!! We love the music, the decorations, the cookies...it's impossible NOT to be filled with joy, isn't it? Perhaps one of our favorite things at Christmastime is the movies. We LOVE Christmas movies! So much so in fact that we decided to start a new tradition-a Christmas countdown of sorts. Every week leading up until Christmas, we will have a Family Holiday Movie Night each Friday. I've already purchased several new wonderful movies for the occasion but perhaps one of the movies I'm most looking forward to experiencing with my family is Hallmark's new one: Northpole. It sounds absolutely magical:

Santa (Robert Wagner) and Mrs. Claus’s (Jill St. John) magical home, Northpole, has grown into a huge city powered by the magic of holiday happiness around the world. Yet the city is in trouble, as people everywhere are too busy to enjoy festive time together. One of these stressed-out souls is Chelsea (Tiffani Thiessen), a single mom who is trying to get noticed at her new reporting job while helping her ten-year-old son Kevin (Max Charles) adjust to a new school. When he starts talking about real elves and actual sleigh rides, she worries that his imagination has gotten out of control. With a little added help from Kevin’s charming teacher Ryan (Josh Hopkins), a mysterious elf, Clementine (Bailee Madison), and a gospel singer named Josephine (Candice Glover), Chelsea may learn that even chasing down the facts can lead to holiday magic.

But as great as the movie itself sounds, nothing is more magical than bringing the movie to life off the screen. So, I took a little trip down to my local Walmart to see what kind of magic they had in store...

From storybooks to North Pole maps. From ornaments to snowball launchers. There was truly a little something for everyone. How on earth was I to choose!? I wanted it all! I knew whatever I chose, my family would love it...but what would best keep the magic of the movie alive throughout the season?

First and foremost, I had to get a story book. There were a few great options to choose from, but I chose the Once Upon A Northpole Christmas story book and Find Me Santa Snowflake. There is nothing greater when the weather gets cold than snuggling up with the kiddos under a cozy blanket with a delicious cup of cocoa and a great book. Ah, that's the life, isn't it? We can experience the Christmas magic over and over again!

For our family, Christmas typically means travel...but with the snowy weather starting early this year we just never know where we might end up Christmas morning. The accompanying Find Me Santa Snowflake is a great way to let Santa know where he can find us...wherever we are! What a relief for the little ones that will be!

Next up, something fun for the little ones...a Magic Snowball. Perhaps one of my little guy's favorite things about the holiday season is the snow! He's obsessed. As soon as the snow starts falling, he start nailing us all with snowballs. Quite honestly, I'm not a fan. This adorable snowball brings the fun indoors...along with the magical colors of the Northern Lights.

Perhaps our favorite Northpole find though was the Northpole Communicator. Yes, seriously...a direct line of communication to Santa's Workshop!! Right now the elves are hard at work getting things ready for their big month, but come December 1, we'll be chatting with the elves all month long! We cannot wait! Talk about a magical holiday!

With all these great products, we will have have no problem keeping the magical Christmas spirit going long after the movie night is over!

Have you checked out the Northpole Collection at your local Walmart? Which products would your family most enjoy?

    Thank the Troops with a Simple Tweet with #TreesforTroops {+ a Holiday Giveaway!}

Thanks to FedEx for sponsoring today's post! I was provided with the same gift basket the winner will receive. All thoughts are my own.

When my husband and I were first married, we had absolutely nothing. No savings, no furniture, again nothing. We went out and bought the bare essentials but for the most part our house was pretty sparse. Of course that included Christmas decorations. That first Christmas we were married, we had nothing, and it wasn't really in our budget to go out and buy a tree.

Thankfully, Trees for Troops came to the rescue. This fantastic program provides trees to military families like ours on bases across the US at no cost. Without this program, we would not have had a tree that year at all I'm sure...and when you are far from loved ones over the holiday seasons, those little things are even more important in bringing in the holiday spirit. We have since built up a collection of holiday decor (to include a Christmas tree), but I will forever be grateful to Trees for Troops for helping our family celebrate that first year!

So, what exactly is Trees for Troops?

FedEx and the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation are once again joining together to make the holidays a little brighter for America’s service members and their families with the Trees for Troops program. www.christmasspiritfoundation.org

o   This year marks the 10th anniversary of the program, which brings together FedEx, the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and tree farmers across America to deliver real Christmas trees to service members stationed across the U.S. and overseas.

o   During the busy weeks leading up to Christmas, FedEx will deliver more than 17,000 live Christmas trees to more than 60 military bases across the U.S. and overseas (Middle East and South Pacific)

o   Trees for Troops is part of FedEx Special Delivery, a nationwide program that supports local organizations by donating transportation services and other assistance to help them fulfill their missions. Since the Trees for Troops program launched in 2005, FedEx has shipped more than 139,000 real Christmas trees to service members and their families

Sounds pretty great, doesn't it? I certainly think so. And this year, FedEx and the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation are asking for your help to spread the holiday cheer.

    How can you help?

It's as easy as saying 'thank you' and sending a special holiday greeting as part of the Tag-A-Tree Campaign. Tweet your message from November 18th—November 24th using the hashtag #TreesforTroops, and FedEx will print out your message and place it on one of the 17,000 Christmas trees going to a military family. It's such a simple act and is truly appreciated by those military families receiving the trees!

To celebrate this wonderful program, FedEx is offering one lucky reader a wonderful holiday gift basket valued at $100!!! What's inside? The exact contents will be a surprise, but I can tell you it will be filled with several popular holiday gifts for you to put under your tree! Exciting!! Enter using the Rafflecopter form below!!

    a Rafflecopter giveaway

Winner will be contacted via e-mail after giveaway ends, and will have 48 hours to respond before a new winner is chosen. One entry per household, winning entry will be verified. Odds of winning depend on valid entries received. A Modern Day Fairy Tale is not responsible for prize delivery.

    Tunes That Teach {A Rivanna Music CD Review}

**Product received for review. All thoughts are my own.

Our minds are funny things aren't they? For many, things like names and dates, math equations and grammar rules never cease to not stick...but that song you haven't heard in years and years and years? You still know every word! Interesting isn't it? Our brains are better able to remember something set to music than just plain ol' facts. Just take a look at how we learn the alphabet for an example. Music is wonderful for ALL kids, but can be especially great for children like my son with autism and other developmental needs.

Cathy Bollinger and Elly Tucker, the incredible minds behind Rivanna Music saw what a powerful role music played in helping little one's of all abilities learn and have created numerous CDs that do just that. Here is a look at the goals they hoped to accomplish:

    • Songs and rhymes are written in a friendly upbeat way,
    • That they use repetition of sounds (alliteration) and words for supporting maximum reinforcement of concepts
    • Use Multisensory Interactivites for learning in variety of ways.
    • Utilize variety of styles and instrumentation for student with learning disabilities and for traditional learners.
    • They provide clear images of concepts.
    • That we make available written lyrics to visually reinforce key points.
    • That the songs ask questions in a way that helps the child gain confidence.
    • Repeat or re-word concepts and issues.
    • Frequently offer variety of examples from real-life situations.
    • Use music to teach and reinforce important ideas.
    • Have practice exercises available for lessons, in case the student has problems with cerain concepts.
    • Have students with learning disabilities vary their approach to learning using music
    • Pace instruction carefully to ensure clarity, using variety of rhythms and instrumentation
    • Provides and teaches memory associations (mnemonic strategies).
    • Supports one modality of presentation by following it with instruction and then use another modality.
    • Sings and speaks distinctly and at rates that a student with learning and processing difficulties can follow.
    • Uses plenty of examples, musical and movement, in order to make topics more applicable.
    • Presents concepts logically, one at a time
    • Encourages students to work with others , if possible to increase social reinforcement
    • Incorporates cross-age presentations and voices for modeling purposes
For this review, I received two of their fun CDs, 'Toddlin' Tunes' and 'My Turn, Your Turn'.

First up, Toddlin' Tunes: A Singalong with Cathy Bollinger. I absolutely adored this! Have you ever noticed that in some children's CDs the singers are well...a little annoying? Absolutely not true here! Cathy's voice is absolutely beautiful. The songs may be for kids, but I still enjoyed listening myself. This CD featured some great classics as we all know and love them like The Muffin Man or Hickory Dickory Dock, along with some modified versions of the classics like Happy and You Know It. I particularly loved the adapted version of Patty Cake- already a favorite in our home, but made even more fun!! In addition to the classics were some great originals from Cathy. We pparticularlyloved Uh-Oh! There were so many great songs- from those that were fun for play to those that iincorporatedfun lessons like cleaning up, sharing and saying please and thank you. It was truly no wonder that it was named as a A 2005 Parents Choice Silver Award Winner! This is a great CD for every toddler!

Next up, My Turn Your Turn...and I loved this one even more! Teaching a child with autism can be a little more complicated than teaching typically developing children. Skills that come naturally to most of us are a challenge. Skills like eye contact and making conversation are skills that naturally just come as we develop. For those with Autism, it's not quite that easy. Kids like my son actually have to be taught these skills through modelling and repetition. He had to be taught how he was expected to answer a simple question like, 'What color shirt are you wearing?' or 'Do you like pizza?' Even now at 7 years old, though he has come very far, Shaun struggles with these interactions. He often forgets that not everyone shares his interests or wants to hear about them nonstop. The songs on this CD perfectly address all of these issues. They serve as a reminder on how to respond to questions, to remember good eye contact, to have mutual two-sided conversations...and they do so beautifully. The songs are fun and catchy so I know my son will remember them easily too! He can and will still benefit from these even now, but I would have LOVED to have had the CD a few years ago too! There's now even an available companion book as well!

Perhaps my absolute favorite song on the CD is 'Everyone Has Strengths To Be Proud Of'. More than anything, this is a lesson I have tried to teach Shaun. Though he struggles with communication and social skills, he has many great skills working in his favor. He has an incredible memory, is a great reader and is just amazing at science and math. I love that he has this little song to help remind him just how truly great he is and that he should always be proud of himself.

If you have a little one with Autism, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Rivanna Music and seeing everything they have to offer. These are truly great songs that can make teaching our little ones these important social skills so much easier. And when you're raising a child with autism, anything that makes things a little bit easier is a great thing! And these aren't just great for home, but school too!!

These are just two of the great albums available from Cathy Bollinger and Rivanna Music. You can see more fun selections and find useful resources at their website.

Which CD from Rivanna Music would you love for the little one in your life?

    Helping Kids Understand Jesus with the Jesus Calling Bible Storybook {A Family Christian Review & Giveaway}

It should come as no surprise by now that my son Shaun absolutely loves his Bibles. He has acquired quite the little collection of Bible storybooks by now...6-7 at my last count. To be honest,in my eyes many of them are pretty much the same- different illustrations perhaps but the stories are pretty well the same. Still for whatever reason he loves them all for different reasons. But now, as I look at Bible storybooks for him, I'm looking for something that will set it apart from the rest. So, when I saw the Jesus Calling Bible Storybook, I knew it fit the bill. Let's take a look:

In the Jesus Calling Bible Storybook, parents and children will love reading through the Bible and seeing God's exciting plan unfold. God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die for our sins and made a plan for us to live forever with Him.

From creation to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, to the apostles and the early church, Jesus has always been present with those who trust Him. This book by Jesus Calling author Sarah Young helps children understand Jesus' role throughout the Old Testament, the New Testament and their lives today. The stories will teach little ones about the Bible and the devotions will lead them to an early and close walk with Jesus.

First and foremost, I was drawn in by the beautiful artwork. Seriously...stunning! Next, the stories. They too were beautifully written. They told those great Bible stories we all know and love in a way that was both easy to read and easier for little ones to understand. Each story was broke down into a short 4-5 page section (sometimes shorter). This is great for kids who might not have a great attention span like my son (or most young kids) and also made it an ideal selection for bedtime stories...just the right length- even when they ask for 'just one more'. There was even a built in bookmark to make it easy to pick up on the next story too! All this on its own would have been enough to make it a pretty awesome storybook all on its own, but its certainly not what set it apart. What REALLY sets this one apart from all the rest are the devotionals. These devotionals are written from the perspective of Jesus, speaking directly to the reader. There is something really powerful about that isn't it?

As you all know, my son has a diagnosis of autism. Like many with autism, he is quite the literal thinker. Though we've talked about prayer and talking to God/Jesus, I'm honestly not quite sure how much of that he really understands about it. God can be a bit of a hard concept to grasp in general for some kids, but I think particular so for those whose minds work like my sons. He does much better with a visual representation. For him, I thought these devotionals were a wonderful tool. Here was a visual of Jesus talking to him..something more concrete and easier for him to grasp...and isn't that something all kids need? Something to make understanding such huge things like the Bible and Jesus just a little easier? For us, Jesus Calling Bible Storybook was ideal.

    Christmas Shopping on Budget

Christmas time is quickly approaching, and I could not be more excited! I absolutely love everything about the holidays! The music, the decorations, the shopping...but my budget? Not so open to taking such a holiday hit! Thankfully, I have found many ways to help save during the holidays! Are you looking to shop on a budget? Here are a few quick tips that have helped me out:

    Start Early.
Once the holiday shopping season starts, the stores are more crowded and the deals go a lot faster! Beat the holiday rush by shopping throughout the year. Many toys actually go on clearance right after the holidays...and again towards the end of summer to clear out for new toys for the holidays!! I personally start checking for sales come January. I shop for birthdays first (my kids' birthdays are in August), and once I've finished shopping for that, I immediately move on to Christmas. By looking throughout the year, not only are you able to find great deals, but you are also spacing out your spending so your budget it taking less of a hit at one time.

    Enter Giveaways.
Giveaways can be a great way to have the chance to win some amazing holiday gifts. I personally love gift card giveaways for this, as they allow me to purchase whatever we need, but have found many great toy/dvd/book giveaways that make amazing gifts as well. It's not guaranteed, of course, but if you're lucky enough to win, this can be a great way to stretch your holiday budget further!

    Black Friday.
I like to try to have the bulk of my holiday shopping done BEFORE Black Friday, but let's be honest...the sales are WONDERFUL! If you're brave enough to fight the crowds, it's certainly a great way to get great gifts and a great price! Don't want to brave the stores? Some stores offer Black Friday prices online as well!

    Price Match.
Find a great deal, but your store is out of stock? Price matching at a different store can be a great option! Walmart and Best Buy are both great for this, and can reduce your gas usage by allowing you to shop in one store as well. Personally, when possible, I love price matching at Best Buy...we get great prices AND earn points as reward members! Which leads us to...

    Rewards Programs.
Best Buy, Sears, KMart, Toys R Us...these are just a few great stores that offer great rewards programs that allow you to earn money back for the purchases you make! Thanks to a wonderful Kmart/Sears promotion last year, I was able to get back nearly what I spent as a Shop Your Way Rewards member! This made for great FREE gifts!!

    Coupons/Coupon Apps.
We mostly think of coupons for food, but there are great toy coupons available as well. Target is my favorite when it comes to coupons! Their holiday toy add included some wonderful coupons that allowed me to get the most for my money AND their Cartwheel app has been amazing this holiday season. Each day they offer one toy for a whopping 50% off!! Awesome! If there is a store you shop at frequently, be sure to get on their mailing list. Gymboree and Osh Kosh B'Gosh send out great coupons often which are good not only for holiday shopping but throughout the year as well (we all know how quickly kids grow!). Some stores like Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works even send out coupons for FREE products (with or without purchase!).

The rest of these tips focus on getting the best deals in store, but making your own gifts can be another great money saver- and a great way to show someone how much you care! Not crafty? That's okay! Bake cookies, buy an inexpensive mug and add a hot cocoa mix, take a photo of your little ones and frame it for the grandparents! The possibilities are endless!

What tips do YOU have for Christmas shopping on a budget?

Giving Thanks When It's Not Easy

Had you told me one year ago today that in one year, my husband would be out of the military and living the civilian life, I would never believed it. That was never the plan. The plan had always been for my husband to stay in 20 years then retire. At 11 years, he was already over half there. Being so close to that goal, I never imagined that he wouldn't be given the chance to see that through. And yet, here we are today...one of many families who found themselves changing plans thanks to downsizing in the military.

To say that these past few months have been a little rough have been an understatement. Military life was by no means ever easy, but it was a life that we had grown accustomed to and enjoyed. It may not have made us millionaires, but it provided everything our family needed- a paycheck, a roof over our heads and health insurance too. The idea of losing that? Very scary. Being a person who has always struggled with severe anxiety anyway, this time has truly tested my strength.

And now we've reached November, the time of year when everyone stops to remember what they are thankful for. To be honest, it would be very easy to feel less than thankful this year, wouldn't it? I mean we literally had our entire life plan turned upside down. And honestly, even now as I've had time to deal with it, it still stinks.

But its not the end of the world. As stressful and uncertain as things have been lately, we are still beyond blessed. So rather than focus on what could have been, this year (and always) I try to focus more on those good things. We certainly have a lot to be thankful for.

    • I am thankful that my husband was given a substantial separations bonus that helped us pay off our vehicles and help keep us on our feet for awhile.
    • I am thankful to be living in a place we love, just a short distance from our friends and family.
    • I am thankful that my husband has been given the opportunity to follow another dream of his- and is currently studying to be an automotive technician.
    • I am thankful that his schooling is not only completely payed for, but that it also gives him a housing allowance to help with our bills.
    • I am thankful for the new job he found-in the automotive field- that he begins on Monday- a job that he is excited about and that will work around his school schedule!
    • I am thankful for this blog and all of the opportunities it has brought me in the past year.
    • I am thankful that it's almost Christmas- my most favorite time of the year. I cannot help but be filled with joy at Christmas!
    • I am thankful for the chance to stop renting and buy a home- something we could not do while in the military!
    • I am thankful that my daughter will never know the difficulty of deployments.
    • I am thankful that we will no longer have to worry about frequent moves, something that is hard on everyone- but especially hard for a child like my son with autism.
    • I am thankful to have a family I love, who can make it through anything.

I know, it's much easier to be thankful when things are going our way, but isn't it more important to take the time to be thankful when they're NOT? Wherever you are this Thanksgiving season...whether life is peachy or you're barely getting by, remember there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for. It may be small, and it may be hard to see, but it's always there.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.-1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

    It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like #Fluffmas {A Charlie Banana Giveaway!}

Welcome to the FluffMas Giveaway Hop hosted by the Blogging Mamas Network! Each blogger in this hop has a fabulously festive and fluffy prize for you, so be sure to hop around to them all and don't miss the fantastic Grand Prize featuring Buttons DiapersBalm Baby, and SprayPal! You can enter to win the FluffMas Grand Prize here.

A huge thanks to Charlie Banana for sponsoring today's giveaway!

When we think Christmas, we so often think toys...toys, toys, TOYS! But who says Christmas has to be just about the toys- why not consider some more practical, eco-friendly options? Like Cloth Diapers!! I know, I know...diapers for Christmas? But I can tell you as a cloth diapering mom, I certainly would have appreciated it...my kids get soooo many toys for the holidays that quite honestly, it gets a little overwhelming...and as infants, it seems many get played with only very briefly. Cloth diapers are a great option- they're reusable from birth to potty training, save mom and dad a ton of money, and well, they're absolutely positively ADORABLE!

Throughout this year, I have had the opportunity to share many wonderful cloth diaper companies with all of you. We've seen all in ones, all in twos and of course pockets...and you all have seemed to love each and every one of them. There was however one company that seemed to stick out above the rest: Charlie Banana!

When I posted my review of their fantastic One Size Diapers, the response was crazy! In fact, the accompanying giveaway was by far the most popular giveaway I've shared so far! Honestly though I can't blame you, they were wonderful...and adorable diapers! You can find out all the wonderful features we loved in my original review right here.

And after several months of use, I have to say I am still in love with them. After many, many uses and washes, they still look like new! The fit is still great, elastics still tight and absorbency still absorbing. They have remained one of our top choices in our stash. They truly have one of the best designs of all the cloth diaper options available, in our opinion! Of course the adorable patterns don't hurt either...even after the patriotic summer months have passed, they still look adorable!

But as much as I loved the Project Save Child and Americano diapers featured in that post, there was perhaps another set I loved even more. The Fluffy Love 3-Pack. This adorable set is all about sharing our love of cloth. I'm certainly not the only one who loved this set...it was the overwhelmingly top pick when asked your favorites!! I mean seriously, how could you NOT love it?

So, I was thrilled when Charlie Banana offered to allow one VERY lucky reader the chance to win this super amazing cloth diaper 3-pack in the Fluffmas Giveaway Event! I'll admit, I'm going to be a little jealous of the winner!!

Take Back Family Movie Night: A Mercy Rule DVD Review & Giveaway

    **Product received for review.

Ah, family movie night...snuggling on the couch with your family with a big bowl of popcorn watching a family friendly movie everyone can enjoy- sounds pretty wonderful, doesn't it? There's just one little problem...family friendly movies that can be enjoyed by all are few and far between. Seriously! What happened to TV/Movies that we could watch as a family?
Kirk Cameron and his wife Chelsea felt the same and decided to do something about it. Here's what they had to say on the subject:

"Our family is always on the lookout for an exciting new movie to watch together on 'movie night.' We look for something fun and inspiring, something that builds our faith in God and our strength as a family. But instead of waiting for a great new movie, we made one! Mercy Rule is one the most exciting movies we have ever been a part of and we are so excited to share it with you." - Kirk and Chelsea Cameron

So, what is Mercy Rule all about? Let's take a look:
Mercy Rule is a baseball adventure for the whole family, starring Kirk Cameron and his wife, Chelsea. Parents and kids alike will be inspired by the story of the Miller family as they learn life’s lessons of mercy, patience, sacrifice, legacy and trusting God. Co-starring Bas Rutten and comedian Tim Hawkins and written by bestselling author N.D. Wilson, Mercy Rule will teach your family what it means to be a "No Quit Family." The DVD also includes a family study guide for further discussion of the important messages in Mercy Rule.

First and foremost I must start by saying that I'm a huge Kirk Cameron fan. Fireproof is one of my all time favorite movies, I love the Left Behind series and of course, who didn't love him in Growing Pains? So of course, I was excited to check this one out as well...especially since it stars his wife as well! (Something the Growing Pains fan is sure to appreciate!). But I'll be honest, it started out a little slow for me. Perhaps I just wasn't in a movie watching mood the first time, but I did have to restart the movie as I'd found myself not paying attention the first time around. Still, once I actually sat down and paid attention, it actually was a really great story...still a bit slow moving, but not in a bad way by any means!

Now, the goal of this movie was to be a movie the family can enjoy together...and it is...just perhaps not with younger children. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing particularly inappropriate (this is Kirk Cameron after all!), I just don't believe the story is one that younger kids would really understand or care too much about...I know my seven year old certainly didn't! So, if you're looking for a family movie for younger kids, this may not be it. But if you're looking for your older children, tweens and teens, it's really a great family movie with lots of great lessons to be learned by all! In fact, you can even download the free discussion guide to discuss some of those lessons including choosing sides, taking responsibility, fighting envy, creating legacies and learning dependence...to name a few. While I enjoyed the movie by itself, after having read through the discussion guide I found that I appreciated the lessons it covered even more.

    As I said, the movie may have started out slow, but truly turned out to be a great movie. It's a movie for families, about family, and created by a family. An excellent addition to any family movie night. If you'd like to learn more or purchase a copy for yourself, Mercy Rule is available to purchase at Family Christian stores.     Messy Beautiful Love: Hope & Redemption for Real Life Marriages {A Book Review & Giveaway}

    **Product received for review.

In our nearly 8 years of marriage, my husband and I have seen many marriages around us begin and end. We've seen seemingly good couples who just couldn't make it work. I couldn't help but wonder WHY? Why had these marriages failed, while ours did not? It's not as though we had never faced challenges- in fact quite the opposite. We had taken on deployments, raising a child with autism, a miscarriage...we'd had points of financial success and points where we were barely hanging on paycheck to paycheck. We hadn't known each other for years and years and years, but in fact had only met one another in person 3 short months before marrying. We were complete and total opposites in nearly every way imaginable. Surely, if any marriage had been through the ringer it had been ours...so why were we still standing strong while these others crumbled.

The answer to that question was really quite simply because we were both willing to fight to make our marriage work. While we may not have a lot in common, one thing we both agreed on was that a marriage was meant to last forever. We knew going in that it was not always going to be perfect. There would be fights, there would be hard times and life would inevitably get in the way of the perfect fairy tale ending. We accepted this but agreed that we would stand together through it all and not give up during those inevitable rough patches. Unfortunately, not everyone has this attitude going into a marriage. We live in this disposable world, where everything can be tossed out when its no longer of use- plates, razors, telephones...even furniture isn't built to last like it was in years passed. Sadly, this is the attitude I've seen many carry into marriages all too often. When things are going good, great...but when times get tough, they just toss the relationship out. They fail to realize that marriages have their ups and downs, and there may be times when it's not as easy to love one another as it is on our wedding day. Sometimes love gets a little messy.

This is what Messy Beautiful Love by Darlene Schacht is all about...those times when love is anything but easy. Let's take a look:

"Messy Beautiful Love" delivers an incredible testimony of grace that offers hope for today's marriages and a spark for rekindling love.
    Love gets messy.
Financial problems, sickness, aging parents, a chronically unhappy spouse . . . trials will inevitably come that threaten your marriage. No matter how long you've been married or how strong your relationship is, sooner or later you are going to have a mess to clean up.
"Messy Beautiful Love" is about cleaning up messes God's way, exchanging your ideas for His, and being prepared for both the best and the worst that marriage has to offer.
When you surrender your relationship to God, then and only then will you experience the blessing of marriage as He intended. This is the blessing of obedience. "Messy Beautiful Love" is an invitation to that obedience. The cynical world says marriages don't last, but God knows better. Tune out the world and tune in to Him. When you do that, a beautiful marriage is not only possible, it's inevitable.

Now, first and foremost, I just adore Darlene Schacht. Her blog Time Warp Wife is one of my absolute favorites, and I adored her first book 'The Good Wife's Guide' so I was excited to read this one as well. Now, when you take a look at the title of that previous book and consider that Darlene's blog is dedicated to marriages, it would be easy to assume that Darlene herself must have the perfect marriage- that she never struggled to be a good wife and that everything was always GOOD. We discover very quickly in Messy Beautiful Love that this is truly not always the case. Darlene is quite open and honest about the past troubles in her marriage, her part in them and how despite what could have (and would have) ended many marriages they overcame. It's easy to look at the perfect couple giving advice on maintaining a marriage and saying 'what do you know? you've never been through trials', but that advice certainly means so much more coming from a couple who has been there. A couple who has weathered the storm and come out on the other side...and that's just what Messy Beautiful Love is. Darlene doesn't claim to be perfect or do it right every time, she shares her shortcomings and failures but also how she continues to strive to do better...something we all need to do in our marriages.

    Whether you are a newlywed who has experienced no trials or a seasoned wife going through the fires, this is certainly a great read for any wife. It is a great reminder that love is not always easy, but it is always worth fighting for. Messy Beautiful Love is available to purchase at Family Christian stores and online.     Finding Hope Now { A DVD Review & Giveaway}

    **Product received for review.

I grew up in a small town. So small in fact that we didn't even have a post office, let alone a store. Growing up out in the country could in many ways be a little boring, but it was also a very safe place to grow up. Gangs?  They were the farthest thing from my mind...sure I'd heard of them, but they weren't a threat where I was from. I was very lucky. Unfortunately, for many others it IS a very real threat. Kids and teens are growing up in a world where gangs are all they know and to many seem like the only option.

In 1993, Reverend Roger Minassian felt God calling him to do something to help. And so, Hope Now for Youth was born. Since it's start, Hope Now for Youth has taken over 2000 gang members and at youth risk off the streets in Fresno, California, giving them a chance at a new and better life. They have taught troubled young men to become husbands to their wives, fathers to their children, and dependable employees who make positive contributions to their families, friends, and communities. So, how did it all begin? Finding Hope Now is inspired by the true story of it's creation. Let's take a look:

In Finding Hope Now, 16-year-old Santos Delgado leaves his home and survives on the streets. Reverend Roger Minassian knows very little about street youth, but feels God’s calling to help. He must step out of his comfort zone and takes to streets ravaged by gang violence. Roger and Santos' lives intertwine as Roger learns to become a father to the fatherless and Santos struggles to find a new life.

Now, I'm not one who usually likes movies that are about gangs or crimes in general, but this movie was absolutely inspiring. Can you imagine what it must have been like to feel that calling to help bring these young gang members off the street? This was not only a world that the Reverend was completely unfamiliar with, but also one that had the potential to be very dangerous. Yet, he took that risk and made such a huge difference in the life of so many.

Can you imagine how amazing this world would be if more people took those kinds of risks? If we looked deeper within a person than where they come from or their name. If we believed that people can change, if given the chance. This is exactly what Finding Hope Now was all about. To be honest, sometimes with inspirational stories like this, it can be very easy to get a little...well, cheesy. I did not find this to be the case here. Sure, there may have been a slightly cheesy moment here or there, but overall I found it genuine and beautiful. I will definitely be watching again!

My favorite thing about the movie? As I said, this movie was inspired by the true store of Hope Now for Youth, and the movie only continue to serve the organizations purpose. Take a look at this snippet from the movie's website:

Our purpose in producing this award-winning film was to raise funds for Hope Now by donating a full 50% of the net film proceeds to this organization, and at the same time to spread the news throughout the world that gang kids can be redeemed. This program can be easily replicated in other cities.

A great movie with a great cause...what's not to love? Want to see it for yourself? It is available to purchase at Family Christian stores everywhere and online. You can see more of what Family Christian has to offer at the links below.
