Book Excerpt

“Here’s the intel I collected from each student who’s planning to be at the retreat.” Jonathon handed Meredith the small stack of index cards he’d had the kids fill out.
“Perfect.” She opened her laptop on the coffee table. “I’ll plug them into the getting-to-know-you bingo card template and then print them out.”
“This was a great idea, by the way. How did you come up with it?”
“I attended a ladies’ retreat earlier this year, and we played it there.” A sigh passed through her lips. “It was amazing.”
“The game or the retreat?”
“Both. That retreat pretty much changed my life.” Her smile suggested as much.
And had him curious. “How so?”
She studied him. “I spent many years being angry at God. On that retreat, I finally found healing.”
He was certain the anger she spoke of stemmed from her mother’s death. Even now, he recalled the vehemence in her tone when she’d tearfully claimed it wasn’t fair. He’d been clueless, though, so he’d comforted her the best way he knew how.
Now he had two daughters of his own. And while they were much younger than Meredith had been when her mother died, they still felt the impacts. Caroline, in particular.
“Any suggestions how I can prevent Caroline and Gracie from that same thing?” He cringed. “I’m sorry. That must’ve sounded ridiculously selfish.”
“No.” She set the cards on the table. “It sounded like a loving father trying to do right by his daughters.
