Once I was on a panel at a writers’ conference, and a man waved his hand and asked, “What inspires you to write?”
I don’t know what kind of answer he was expecting—my muse? A sunset? The glory of God? But my answer was simple: “The mortgage!”
Because while a muse, a sunset, and God’s glory can inspire me, the thing that puts me at my desk every day is the mortgage. Writing is a job like any other, and that’s why and how I keep writing books. Does a dentist have to be inspired to work on people’s teeth? No. Does a Christian dentist only work on Christian teeth? No.
I believe writing is a job like any other, and a skilled writer can write anything for anyone—and should. Though some of my books are written about Bible characters and spiritual themes, my real passion is in writing stories for the world at large, “parable stories” that are great stories on the surface with a spiritual meaning underneath. The Glades is one of those stories.
On the surface, it’s a story about a woman who throws a fancy birthday party on a private island in the Everglades. Beneath, it’s a story about how she has chosen to leave the truths she was taught in order to live an artificial life with an artificial husband on an island surrounded by creatures who don’t belong there—and neither does she.
I hope you’ll enjoy reading THE GLADES as much as I enjoyed writing it. And if you visit the Everglades, whatever you do, do not go in alone.
