A Behind the Scenes Look at The Puzzle Within
The settings in the Puzzle Within include a series of fictionalized locations. All of the clues send the characters to real places in Colorado, but I changed the names, so that I could alter details as needed. Since these settings are based on real places, you can visit them. I used Google and maps to research them, but I would love to visit in person sometime. Though the Walker Mansion Ruins are only accessible by a hike at 9,000 feet above sea level, so I’m not sure about that one.
These settings include:
Silver Lake - Lake Dillon
Wynkoop Station – Union Station
Abbot Castle Ruins – Walker Mansion Ruins
Chroma Cliffs – Paint Mines Interpretive Park
I also created two countries that don’t exist in the real world. One of them is a middle eastern country that Ambassador Van Sloan had been posted before a military coup forced him to evacuate.
The other country is an island that plays a major role in the story. I can’t give you many details or I might give away a spoiler, but I had a lot of fun worldbuilding this new country. I had to give it a history, a culture, a flag, and a legend. It was interesting trying to imagine and describe a place that didn’t exist and still make it as realistic as possible.
The emblem on the flag is an eagle wearing a crown and holding an ax and a key in its talons. Here’s the legend behind it: a north African fisherman was washed ashore during a big storm. An eagle rose from the sea and gave the fisherman an ax and a key to build his kingdom on the island. In exchange, the fisherman made the eagle ruler over the sea and sky around the island.
