“Dear, please sit down and have some tea. Jake will find Callie. He knows those woods inside and out.”

Olivia continued to pace the wraparound porch. The moment Callie had taken off, guilt had consumed her mind. Jake had warned her about removing Callie’s leash. Her eyes scanned the property. The wildflowers covering the fields were quickly fading into the shadows. Olivia shuddered to think what could happen if it got too dark to keep searching for the puppy. “What if he doesn’t? I’ll never forgive myself if something happens to her.”

“Relax. You worry too much. Jake will find her.”

Myrna stood up from the rocking chair and picked up the teakettle from the side table. She filled a cup and placed it on a saucer. “Here, drink this. It’s chamomile. It will calm your nerves.”

Olivia accepted the beverage and sat on the edge of the rocker. A brisk breeze whooshed up the porch steps and caused a shiver to move down her spine. Callie is too small to be off on her own. What if there are coyotes in the area? Why in the world did I remove the leash knowing Callie isn’t trained?
