“The Confession Musical” is based on the New York Times best-selling book series “The Heritage of Lancaster County,” written by Beverly Lewis and written for the stage by Emmy-Nominated screenwriter Martha Bolton.

Katie Lapp, a young Amish girl, discovers her parents have been keeping a secret from her… she is adopted. Katie decides to seek her birth mother, defying the rules of her Amish village and risking a shunning. Meanwhile, her wealthy birth mother, Laura Mayfield, battling an illness that might take her life, begins searching for her long-lost daughter to bequeath her inheritance before it is too late. Secretly plotting against her is the gold-digging husband Dylan (played by John Schneider), who is scheming to make sure he inherits her fortune. With the help and prayers of her Christian maidservant (played by Chonda Pierce), they try to foil Dylan’s plan and reunite Katie and Laura.

When I read the description of the new "The Confession Musical", I couldn't help but think it sounded pretty dramatic and full of heart. While I was familiar with Beverly Lewis' Amish novels, I had yet to personally read the series on which the play had been based. I was intrigued by the idea of this Amish musical and couldn't wait to check it out for myself.

I must admit that seeing the stage on screen was a unique experience for me and one that I wasn't sure how I felt about at first. Despite my initial hesitation though, it didn't take me very long at all to be drawn into the story. And boy, what a story it was! Family secrets, grief and loss, deception... even a shunning! Honestly, there was actually quite a lot of hard stuff tackled in this musical... so what really surprised me was how much humor it had as well.

That was, in large part thanks to Emmy® -nominated and best-selling comedian/actress Chonda Pierce. She played a somewhat zany maid and her character provided some much-needed levity to what otherwise had the potential to be a very depressing story. Whether it was a funny quip or one of her epic facial expressions, I couldn't help but laugh along.

Real life can be like that too, can't it? Life can get extremely messy and tough... but if we look around us, we can still find the joy and the humor despite it all. Like the joy we can find in watching a musical with our friends and family!

Check out this interview with Chonda:

Of course, while I definitely appreciated the humorous moments in the play, the dramatic ones were done just as wonderfully too. This story took me through a roller coaster of emotions and the actors brought those emotions to the stage/screen wonderfully. I love Smallville, so seeing John Schneider take on the role of the mean and greedy husband was quite entertaining for me to see as well. Overall, I found it to offer a great blend of drama, humor and musical goodness... it's certainly one I'll want to watch again!
