GUEST POST

MY LIFE AS A WRITE-AT-HOME MOM
by Tanya Agler

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog today. When my two older children were in school, I started writing a book and then worked up the courage to tell my husband about it. He replied, “What took you so long to realize you’re a writer?” A short time thereafter, I found out I was pregnant with twins. When they were in preschool, I decided it was time to follow that dream of being a write-at-home mom. Fast forward six years, and I received the call from my agent that Harlequin wanted to publish my first book.

My routine has changed since my twins finished preschool and started attending elementary school. I’m the mom of four with three living at home and one away at college. I’m also very routine-oriented. I drop the twins off at school and then head for a local restaurant (usually Panera) or library so I can write for three hours. While I’d love to write at home, my beagle would have other plans for me, including a nice long walk or petting him while he napped on my lap, and our house is a little cramped. I don’t have a dedicated office space, but I did recently buy a folding desk and have started using that. I’ve found that morning is my best writing. I say no to most commitments, but being a writer has allowed me the flexibility of having the best of both worlds. I’ve had the privilege of being a chaperone for field trips, a driver for long-distance debate tournaments, and a classroom reader for holiday parties. My afternoons are dedicated to marketing or providing a critique or some other writing task. Then I pick up Cupcake and Chunk from school and then it’s time to make dinner and spend time with my family.

My routine is the best way I know to balance family with a career in writing. Truthfully, I’m still looking for the right balance as my house is in need of a thorough cleaning and my to-do list is the size of Denali. However, I love writing, and I love encouraging other writers. If you’ve always dreamed of writing a book and don’t know where to start, I was in that same place when my middle child was in kindergarten. Talking to my husband about my dreams of writing was a big first step. Then after the twins entered preschool, finding an author group who presented workshops and encouraged writers to help each other provided me with direction. Getting my first critique was an eye-opener, but it showed me how much I wanted to continue and how my fellow authors had so much knowledge to impart. From there, little steps added up to a mile: finishing a first draft, finding a critique partner, editing the book, querying until I found my agent, and then repeating with another book and so on. A supportive author network is invaluable to me, and please feel free to contact me if you need someone in your corner if you’re starting your first novel.

That’s a look into my world as a write-at-home mom! I love spending time with my characters and then going home to a chaotic and caring family.
