Welcome, Darlene! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Coordinates of Death.
Thanks so much for having me. I’m truly honored!
Can you share 5 random facts about yourself that we won’t find in your bio?
Yikes, 5? LOL Let’s see…
- I love going to the movies by myself! When I finish a proposal, manuscript or some other milestone, I sometimes treat myself to a movie during the day. Such fun! Wait, I just passed in my next book. Any good movies playing?
- I’m the only child in my family with red hair! My brother used to call me Rusty Brains. 😊
- My favorite meal on a Friday night is chicken fingers and sweet potato fries. Haha!
- I used to do some modelling back in my younger years.
- I’m an early morning gal. Love that time of the day. So quiet and peaceful.
When did you first discover you had a passion for writing?
After I read my first Nancy Drew book! I even started to write my own “Mindy Dobson” series. However, I didn’t pick up my pen again until years later.
What drew you to suspense?
Again, Nancy Drew! Haha. My love of mystery then followed me throughout the years…Agatha Christie, Phyllis A. Whitney, etc. For television…Charlie’s Angels, Murder She Wrote, then later Castle, etc. I’ve always loved a good mystery.
What was the most interesting or surprising thing you learned in researching this book?
Researching different types of ciphers and how they work was very interesting. There are many!
As a suspense writer, what is the most incriminating search we’d find on your web history?
Great question, but if I tell you, I’d have to kill you. Kidding of course! One time I was researching how long a certain poison would take to work and the suicide prevention phone number popped up. I’m glad the internet world helps with these types of things. This taught me a lesson…always start with: “For my novel…” LOL
What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?
Keeping all the clues, ciphers, shadow boxes straight without giving away the killer’s identity. I wanted readers to “play along” and unfold the mystery with Aurora and Kordell!
The most rewarding?
Seeing the cover is one of the many rewarding parts of bringing this story to life. It’s like Christmas morning when you open that email that says here’s your cover. Harlequin’s marketing and art team did an awesome job on the cover. Also, hearing readers say how much they enjoyed the story is SO rewarding!
Describe your main character(s) in three words.
Stubborn. Brave. Relentless.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
We are beacons in this world of darkness. I pray that readers see through the pages of Coordinates of Death that no matter what rough storms we go through, God will be with us in the darkness and make us stronger.
