The Earl's Lady Geologist

Title: The Earl's Lady Geologist
Series: The Linfield Ladies Series
Author: Alissa Baxter
Publisher: Vinspire Publishing
Release Date: February 28, 2021
Genre: Clean Regency Romance

Cassandra Linfield is a lady fossil collector who declares she will never marry as no man will ever take her studies seriously. When circumstances force her to travel to Town for the Season, Cassy infiltrates the hallowed portals of the Geological Society from which she has been banned. She is horrified when she comes face to face with her nemesis, the infuriating Earl of Rothbury.

Lord Rothbury is a gentleman-geologist with a turbulent romantic past. After a youthful disappointment, he vows never to fall in love again and makes the decision, instead, to seek out a convenient wife when he returns to England from his geological travels abroad.

Brought together by their close family ties, Cassy and Rothbury collaborate on a geological paper and discover a powerful attraction. Marriage, however, is the one subject they cannot agree upon. But when Cassy’s life is threatened, the two realize that love matters more than their objections.

Alissa Baxter

Alissa Baxter wrote her first Regency romance, The Dashing Debutante, during her long university holidays. After traveling the world, she settled down to write her second Regency romance, Lord Fenmore's Wager, which was inspired by her time living on a country estate in England.

Alissa then published two chick-lit novels, The Truth About Clicking Send and Receive (previously published as Send and Receive) and The Truth About Cats and Bees (previously published as The Blog Affair).

Many years later, Alissa returned to her favorite time period and signed a three-book contract with Vinspire Publishing for her Linfield Ladies Series, a trio of Regency romances that feature women in trend-setting roles who fall in love with men who embrace their trailblazing ways... at least eventually.

Alissa currently lives in Johannesburg with her husband and two sons. She is a member of The Beau Monde - Regency Fiction Writers.

Hi Alissa! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers the chance to get to know you and your new book- The Earl’s Lady Geologist?  a little bit better!

Hi Randi! Thanks for featuring my novel on your blog. I really appreciate it.

I like to start these interviews the same way with something fun to break the ice:

Can you share 5 random facts about yourself that we will NOT find in your bio?

I went to boarding school from the age of 12.

I love wearing dresses.

I speak three languages.

I like hiking in the countryside.

I like scones and tea.

When did you first discover you had a passion and talent for writing?

At the age of seven, I knew that I wanted to be an author. I loved reading everything I could get my hands on. When I was 11, I heard of a young girl who had published a children’s s book, and I promptly decided to write my own story. I handed it in to my teacher, and naively believed that this was my first step to publication. Unfortunately, Miss Haskins only pinned it to the classroom wall! But I persevered, and at the age of 19, I started writing my first novel.

Can you tell us how you first discovered Regency period novels and what drew you to creating them yourself?

At the age of eleven, I discovered my mom’s collection of Georgette Heyer novels. The first Heyer novel I ever read was Sylvester, and I was hooked on Georgette Heyer after that. I read and reread her books and fell totally in love with the Regency period and Heyer’s grey-eyed heroes.

What type of research goes into creating a story in this genre?

I do a tremendous amount of research as I frequently choose to write about topics about which I know very little. I researched fossils and geology in the 19th century for about six months before I started writing The Earl’s Lady Geologist. To write about any subject convincingly, I need to understand it; otherwise, my creativity stalls.

I also research word usage during the Regency period and all the tiny details required to bring that world convincingly to life  – the fashions, furnishings, buildings and books of the era.

Can you tell us a little bit more about The Earl’s Lady Geologist?

The first novel in my Linfield Ladies series, The Earl’s Lady Geologist, features a lady geologist, Cassandra Linfield, who lives in Lyme Regis during the Regency period. I was looking for an

idea for a novel a few years ago when I read an article about Mary Anning, a pioneering female palaeontologist. It sparked my imagination, and Cassandra Linfield popped fully formed into my

mind - a young lady fossil collector who befriends Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, two women scientists in the early 19th century who dedicated their time to this emerging scientific field.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

It was so satisfying to include the early female pioneers of palaeontology in my story and to highlight the achievements of women scientists who gained little recognition during their lifetime. I felt privileged to give them a voice 200 years later! I hope that readers will be inspired by these remarkable women who had amazing careers in the Regency period despite the many obstacles in their path.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer these questions.

Thank you!

Before you go, are there any other projects you are currently working on that you can share?

The Earl’s Lady Geologist is the first book in The Linfield Ladies Series, a Regency trilogy about trailblazing women of the 19th century. The Viscount’s Lady Novelist and The Baronet’s Lady Biologist are the other books in the trilogy.
