Can she protect her gym students before her past catches up?
When Chloe Ainsworth's older sister reappears after fourteen years, she brings with her the news that Chloe's abuser is back in town. Chloe is a coach at her childhood gym and fiercely protective of her young gymnasts. She won't allow them to suffer the way she did, but she's desperate for an ally—one who can help her make her case.
Law student Dare Shepherd works at the local legal clinic, where he meets Chloe and hears her out. He believes her case but can't get the clinic director on board. As he learns more about her story, he finds himself bound by a deepening personal care for Chloe.
They band together in search of answers, and suddenly the stakes skyrocket. It's clear they're onto something, but will they be able to find the answers before it's too late?

Grandma rocked back and forth in a steady, slow rhythm, and Chloe’s heartbeat matched the beat. “The sadness, though, it still cloaks her.”
“Why do you think that is?”
“It’s hard to let go when you’re convinced it wasn’t suicide and no one will listen.” Grandma sighed and then patted Chloe’s knee again.
“She seems to fight us when we say it was suicide.”
“Mrs. Lawson learned the hard way that it was easier to go along.” Grandma’s gaze filled with sorrow. “There’s a lot of work to do, but don’t forget to do the inside work too. That’s often the most important.” Then she pushed to her feet, and her dog did too. “I’ll let you girls go to it. Have fun.”
And Chloe tried to, she really did, as her friends led her to Janae’s tiny home. But as they settled into the petite furniture in the first-floor sitting area, she couldn’t stop thinking about Libby. “What if the mayor and Grandma are right?”
“What do you mean?” Janae had settled onto her favorite antique couch, which was pint-sized and uncomfortable.
“In one of our few conversations, Ginny brought up Libby and said she didn’t commit suicide.”
Margeaux frowned. “Then she should have done something. Gone to the police.”
“Maybe she did. But even if she didn’t, the reaction would have been the same. They weren’t going to believe her any more than they believed us.” Chloe rubbed over her heart. “No one listened to my questions.” Margeaux nibbled her lower lip. “I never went to the police. I couldn’t.” “Why not?” Chloe tried not to gape at her.
“I couldn’t risk losing and making him mad enough to take Emma.”
“But you were the one person who couldn’t lose, because of Emma.” The fact she was pregnant and a DNA test could confirm who the father was would have irrefutably proved his filth in a way he couldn’t elude.
Margeaux shivered and pulled a blanket from the back of the chair and around her shoulders. “Not when he made it plain he would convince everyone I seduced him.”
“That’s laughable.” Janae’s face screwed up with disgust, and Chloe almost had to move away.
“Is it though? We all know what happens to victims today. What would they have done to me back then? And then he could have obtained custody of that pure bundle of joy. No way would I risk that.”
As she listened, the pieces clicked into place. The strategy Alex Scott had used to keep them all in line fifteen years earlier. He’d been effective, hitting each of them at their point of greatest fear.
She couldn’t let him do that again.
