Falling in Love with My Unseelie Kidnapper by Camilla Evergreen: Book Review

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

The Book

Freedom was in my hands…until a tall, dark, and dangerous faerie kidnapped me.

You’d think living in an abusive household with an arranged marriage looming over me would be better than getting snatched off the streets and tossed in a cage.

You’d be wrong.

Castor’s nightmarish palace may be wrought with monsters, but when he—the king among them—kneels before me, calls me his, and tells me I may take the still-beating heart from his chest if I desire it, I know exactly which prison I prefer.

I’ll always choose literal bars, found family, and obsession hinging on the brink of madness over my mother’s clutches.

Because while this might not quite be freedom, it definitely is becoming home.

Falling in Love with My Unseelie Kidnapper is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with light fantasy elements, neurodivergent characters, and plenty of closed-door sizzle without the spice.

The Author

Camilla Evergreen writes sweet, closed-door romantic comedies full of snark, swoon, and slow-burn chemistry. Her stories celebrate neurodivergent heroines, grumpy or flirty heroes, lots of banter, and plenty of found family.

Fueled by too much anime and an overactive imagination, Camilla spends her days dreaming up stories with love, laughs, and lore. Her favorite tropes include: fake dating, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, and boss/employee. Expect a little magic and a lot of heart as everything she writes focuses on the message that, no matter what, you are not alone.

Book Review

Camilla Evergreen books truly are in a category all of their own. Castor and Dani's story is undeniably a dark romance. He kidnaps her, keeps her in a cage, there's stabbing and a dark past... all the things you expect to see in that genre... and yet, there is also this perfect mix of lightness that somehow makes it feel just as sweet as it is dark. Truly, I don't know how she pulls it off, and yet, she does... every single time. That said, it's still certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and I'd definitely recommend reading the author's note prior to reading to decide if it's for you. But for those of us who have always felt... well, not quite normal... there's something really refreshing about this series as a whole. It so perfectly touches on mental health and neurodivergent minds within this fun fantasy world that feels welcoming and unique. It's a series that will make you laugh one moment and bring you to tears the next. While I'm a bit sad to see this series end, Castor's story takes it out on a high note that I couldn't help but enjoy!

Falling in Love with My Unseelie Kidnapper is a closed-door romance with kisses only, though there is some innuendo and talk of sex, as well as minimal minor language. It is the sixth and final book in the That's (Para)normal series. While you might be able to read this as a standalone, I personally wouldn't recommend it. Camilla has created quite a unique world in this series, with each book giving us a little more understanding of things in this world work. As such, I can imagine it would be very difficult to fully understand both this world and the various relationship dynamics without having read the prior books.
