Two wounded hearts. One fragile hope. A love that dares to take root.

Blooming Grove, Texas, 1896

Deputy Rabb Truitt has sworn to protect Blooming Grove. But when a clerical error sets a criminal free, Rabb blames himself. He should’ve admitted he can’t read, and now he must resign. If he failed the town once, he could fail it again.

A recent survivor of a devastating fire, Sallie Parker refuses to let Rabb give up the job he loves. She helps him make sense of letters on the page, and as his knowledge grows, so do their feelings for each other.

When a series of mysterious events surround Sallie’s school, Rabb fears a connection to cattle rustlers he’s pursuing. Each day without arrest, the demands for mob justice increase. Rabb races to protect the town and the woman he loves. But is he too late?

Perfect for fans of Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, and Jody Hedlund, Seeds of Hope is a faith-based historical romance filled with small-town danger, friends-to-lovers tenderness, found family, courage, and the promise that God can grow hope in even the hardest places.

The Inspiration Behind Seeds of Hope

Every book begins with a question. Some are simple. Others, not so much. My question for Seeds of Hope fell in the latter category. It was something I’d wondered about for years.

When I was a school librarian, I read a picture book by Amy Hest called Mr. George Baker. It was a profound and unassuming story about a 100-year-old man who’d never learned to read. I read it over and over to the children in my library, and each time I reflected how hard it would be to navigate the world without knowing how to read.

How would a person earn a living? Would people ridicule or support a nonreader? Would anyone take the time to help? These questions and others loomed in the back of my mind until finally Seeds of Hope presented the opportunity to work out possible answers. And with one of my favorite characters, no less. One who begged to be taken seriously, to be a man with hero status.

So my story question became this: how can my hero—Rabb Truitt, whom I love—get by for so long without knowing how to read?

Seeds of Hope was born from that question. It wasn’t easy creating a story around this concept, but the more I wrote, the more the story became personal. I remembered former students who struggled to read, whose fragile self-concepts suffered because reading was a struggle. I love to read, and I wanted those students to know the joy of escaping into different times and places through the pages of a book.

My heroine, Sallie Parker, steps up to help Rabb fill in the gaps in his understanding, and his confidence in himself grows along with his knowledge. Sallie extends her instruction later in the story with her students when she uses tactile methods of reading, spelling, and math. Sometimes it takes different approaches to teach a person how to read. The important thing is to never stop trying.
