"Down through the ages, the first teachers of godly world changers were not theologians; they were mothers."
When I came across this quote in the introduction to Moms of the Bible by Rhonda Stoppe, I had to pause and think about that idea for a moment. What a beautiful thought, but not one that I'd ever really considered either. This book, however, truly serves as a reminder of just that. Take a look:
Have you ever whispered to yourself, I’ll be a better mom tomorrow…but tomorrow never comes? Maybe you’re comparing yourself to other moms and feel you aren’t measuring up. But don’t lose hope. Just as moms in Scripture learned from life’s ups and downs, with God’s help, you can become the mom you long to be.
Moms of the Bible explores timeless life lessons from Bible moms of all types, revealing how their stories of failure, faith, and hope can help you fulfill your own calling with confidence. From the redeemed Rehab to the horrible Herodias, each story unveils eye-opening insights and powerful applications that can help you as you seek to raise up children who impact their generation with fearless faith.
Author Rhonda Stoppe engages you with the warmth and wisdom of a trusted friend who’s been there herself. For mothers of all ages and stages—including step, adoptive, foster, and grandmothers raising their grandkids—this uplifting look at the moms of Scripture will empower you to influence the culture in profound ways through your sacred ministry of motherhood.
This book takes a look at some of the many moms in the Bible, encouraging us to go deeper into their stories and what we can learn from them. Some of these are moms who we hear about frequently in Mother's Day sermons and the like- Mary, Naomi, Hannah, etc., but I loved that this book also included some mothers we don't think about as often... to include some of the moms who were flawed and didn't get things right. There was a lot to be learned in each of their stories. Right from the start, I really found myself enjoying the author's writing style... in some ways it read almost like a novel in parts, feeling more personal than I've heard some of these stories before. There were personal experiences from the author mixed with Biblical stories (with plenty of references so that we could go and read them for ourselves, something I always personally appreciate in nonfiction) and ending in questions to make us think and reflect. There was something really warm and relatable about the style, making it feel like a conversation with a friend... but again, still packed with scripture! At the end of each chapter, we are also given a QR code linked to a video of the author teaching on that particular chapter. While I personally find that I much prefer reading to watching videos, I loved that this was included for those who do prefer more a multi-media approach. This book may be aimed at moms, but I couldn't help but think there are lessons within these pages that we could all learn from just the same too!
