Book Excerpt

Chris tugged at the hem of her skirt as she reached the top of the grand stairway to the second floor of the opera house. A dance competition at an opera house seemed like the appropriate place to wear a skirt, but she should have double-checked before she rushed through her closet and out of the house. Then she would have realized she’d grabbed Caro’s skirt on accident. If Chris had returned it when her sister had asked, she wouldn’t be stuck in a skirt that was three inches too short.

“Sweetheart!”

She turned toward the familiar voice of her mother. On the far side of the spacious lobby, her parents waved. Mom wore one of her hand-painted silk scarves like a necklace over a black maxi dress. Maybe she’d consider swapping outfits with Chris for the night.

“I’m so glad you could make it this time.” Mom hugged her—always a weird situation since Chris had outgrown her in the eighth grade.

“You look amazing, honey.” Dad gave her a side-arm hug.

Chris glanced around the room. A few other women wore skirts, but there were also dresses, capris, khakis, and even a few pairs of jean shorts. “It’s not as fancy as I thought it’d be.”

“Don’t worry about it. You look amazing.”

The deep voice of her complimenter sent tingles down her legs. She recognized that voice from a lifetime ago. Turning slowly, she clenched her jaw shut to stop from gaping.
