Book Excerpt

Before I can tell her how much I appreciate her friendship, her cell phone chimes. 

“Hello, Agnus. Did you girls make it home safely?” Delores asks. 

I hear Agnus’s panicked voice on the other end but can’t make out what she’s saying. 

“Slow down! You’re talking too fast.” Delores listens for a minute or two, then yells into the phone, “You’ve gotta be kidding me.” 

Taking my eyes off the road momentarily, I glance at Delores. Her eyes are as big as saucers, and her face is beet red. My stomach drops as a range of emotions crosses her face. 

Before I have time to ask if I need to pull over, red-and-blue lights flash in my rearview mirror. Our vehicle is the only one on the highway. The cop car accelerates, shortening the distance between us. The speedometer indicates I’m only driving two miles over the speed limit. 

“I’m so sorry, Sarah.” Delores’s face is now drained of color. “You better pull over.”

Janell Goodrich York is a retired high school guidance counselor. She was born in Indiana, but raised in a small town in Southwest Missouri. Janell loves to travel, especially to beach destinations. She loves to hang out with her family and spoil her two dogs. Janell lives in Missouri with her wonderful husband, Jim. Her first book, The Day Sarah Ran Away, was published by Scrivenings Press August 2025.
