“Shut down?” Caleb could almost see Haggerty try to stop his mind from spinning. “That's not possible.”

Caleb tapped his phone twice, then handed it over. “This is a summary of our new orders from General Burgess. All PPTF operations are suspended—in Italy, in Crete, our holdovers in Spain and Brazil. Everywhere. All personnel are recalled back to Fort Meade. Including you and me.”

Haggerty stared for several seconds, mouth working but saying nothing. Eventually he croaked, “How? Why?”

Caleb sighed. “A little less than two days ago—actually, right around the time you were getting stuck in this cave—there was a terrorist attack in Jerusalem. Eight suicide bombers. They were positioned at different points in the courtyard around the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and they detonated their ordnance simultaneously.”

“No . . .” Haggerty's face was white.

Caleb nodded. Wearily. “Yeah. Lots of civilians in the courtyard, and a large percentage of them ran into the mosque for cover. Which was bad, because about thirty seconds after the initial explosions, a second attack directly targeted the mosque. Heavy explosives. The news reports say it was RPGs, but our intel agencies think it was a Reaper-type drone. Probably multiple drones.”

Haggerty gaped. “Not one of ours . . . ?”

Caleb shook his head. “No, but a similar level of tech.”

“With the civilians still inside,” Haggerty said.
