How to Plot a Payback by Melissa Ferguson: Book Review

*Book received for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

He crossed an ocean, and it still wasn’t enough to escape his lifelong nemesis. Now he has to work with her.

Successful screenwriter Finn Masters just landed his dream job writing for Neighbors, one of Hollywood’s highest-rated, longest-running sitcoms. The only downside? It will put him back in proximity of the show’s universally adored, optimistic, altruistic star, Lavender Rhodes, who has been inadvertently ruining his life since they were school chums in England. But she doesn’t even know she destroyed his acting career and wrecked his relationship with the love of his life.

He’s not about to let this woman yank yet another dream out from under his feet. In fact, he realizes he’s been given the ideal opportunity to plot his payback: spinning her character in shocking new directions. What could go wrong? Only everything. As Finn’s not-so-brilliant plot backfires one scene after the next, catching him in the blasts, he’s forced to think about this impossible, infuriating…and maybe even lovable woman in an entirely new light.

From the moment I saw this cover/read the title, I wanted to read this one... and though it was a little different than I expected, I found that I really did enjoy it!

From the start, I was drawn into the story. We meet Finn who is a TV writer who is offered a new job on one of TVs hottest sitcoms--- a show called Neighbors that was giving off some pretty major Friends vibes, which was super fun! The problem? The star of the show is his worst enemy... only she doesn't know it! Unbeknownst to her, he has a running list of all the ways he feels like she has caused issues in his life and so he decides he will get payback. Is his attitude a little bit childish? Yes, but I found myself enjoying the story, nonetheless. Lavender is a really sweet character--- almost perfectly so. Every attempt he makes to get revenge... well, let's just say it doesn't work out for him. This leads to some humorous mishaps throughout. This is definitely very much a slow burn... I would have definitely enjoyed the romance starting earlier, but for those who prefer that slower burn, they'll definitely appreciate that. I felt like the story was definitely more personal growth than romance for the larger part of the story. Enjoyable, just a little different than expected. Overall, I really enjoyed this story... it was cute and unique and definitely worth a read!
