“I just want it so bad,” she said.
Her voice gave out a little at the end. He had to ask, “Want what?”
“The Normal. Our Normal. I want it so much it hurts. To be able to go for walks together. See a movie. Imagine a future together.”
A sharp pain swelled in his chest. “I know,” he murmured quietly. “I want that too.”
Lara leaned away and shook her head quickly, sending her dark, damp tresses swaying. “And you know we can’t.”
His first instinct was to redirect them from the collision course with pain this line of thought led to. “One day—”
“No. I let myself think that too. With how quiet things had been. It’s silly, but I enjoyed the past month together. I could almost picture our lives playing out that way for good. It would be a weird life. Wonderful in a way. Always dodging the lies and dark. Holding out a light to those we could trust. But today ...”
Her voice hitched, and a sob shook her. She cupped her face in her hands as the tears ran faster through the dams of her fingers. “Today, I almost lost you. All we did was stop to call my mom, and I almost lost you.”
Elliott’s throat felt tight. If she only knew that it wasn’t just that. His secret searches had brought down the added dangers. She was right, though. No matter how adamant they were each morning about sticking together to the end, that end was always perilously close at hand. Him loving her, being with her, was too dangerous. For her. For him. And, he dreaded, for love.
