Paramilitary Romantic Thriller

A soldier, a Malinois, and a stuntwoman walk onto a TV set . . .

Former Special Forces operator Sergeant Crew Gatlin takes everything in stride, even the career-ending incident that separated him from the Army, half a leg, and his beloved working dog, Havoc K027. Putting his life back together and lying low, he takes a job with A Breed Apart and is unexpectedly reunited with Havoc. It’s too good to be true—and the proof is in their first assignment: to work as a K-9 team for a television drama in Los Angeles. Miffed at being relegated to TV fodder, he’s willing to pay the price when he sees the stuntwoman.

Being a stunt double allows Vienna Foxcroft to fulfill her acting dream—with a side of MMA—and stay out of the limelight. The same one that plagued her childhood and put her through a nightmare scenario. Now, her tight-knit stunt team are the only ones she trusts. Then in walks Mr. Mountain-of-Muscle and his tough-as-nails dog, and Vienna has a bad feeling her life is about to turn upside down.

Ticked as they head overseas for a location shoot in Turkey, Crew guts it up—after all, he has Havoc again. Okay, and yeah—Vienna is going, too. When an attack sends the cast fleeing into the streets of Turkey, Vienna must face the demons of her past or be devoured by them. And Crew and Havoc are tested like never before.

Experience the high-octane thrill ride that is the first book in the A Breed Apart: Legacy series.

Author Interview

Welcome, Ronie! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Havoc.

I like to start these interviews the same way, with something fun to break the ice. Can you share 5 random facts about you that we will not find in your bio?

  1. I’ve owned three Belgian Malinois, including the best dog I’ve ever known—PEDD VVolt N629 (2008-2020), who radically changed my life and after whom I modeled Havoc.
  2. I am a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo and have training in Kali.
  3. In my 20s, I was a concert ticket coordinator for a large Christian retail chain and met many Christian artists like—I’m totally going to age myself here—DC Talk, Rich Mullins, Carman, White Heart, Petra, Disciple, Rebecca St James, Amy Grant, Big Tent Revival, etc., Newsboys, Steven Curtis Chapman, Kutless, Kim Boyce, etc..
  4. My mom was from Ireland, and I spent a lot of summers and even a full year visiting her family in Dublin while my father was TDY.
  5. My agent called me an empath—like Deanna Troi from Star Trek: the Next Generation—because I am very sensitive to the emotions of those around me and often take on that emotional “weight.”

When did you first discover you had a passion for writing? Did you always know it was something you would pursue professionally?

I’ve been telling stories since I was a kid. I remember loving it in 5th grade when our Reading teacher had us write a story once a month, which she collected, and at the end of the year, we put them into a binder. I can remember that like I am still there. However, I had zero desire to pursue getting published because I feared losing my passion for something I loved so much. It wasn’t until 2000 that I started that process.

As a military child and spouse, you’ve moved around a lot. Do you feel like that experience has made you a stronger writer?

I should clarify—my husband was medically discharged due to a training injury in the first year of our marriage, so our moves (and there have been a lot) have been job-related but not military related. But the many moves are not something that have helped my writer, but they have made me a stronger person, learning to adapt and roll with punches.

If you had to describe your main character(s) in this story in just three words each, what would they be?

Military, witty, determined.

Can you tell us a little bit more about Havoc?

I had a blast writing this story about a four-legged hero. It seems every book I’ve picked up about an MWD or a handler are centered around PTS, so I really wanted to do something different with Crew and Havoc. In the end, it was the most fun I’d had writing a story in a long while.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life? The most rewarding?

The most challenging was simply the time it took to get it done. Life was throwing a lot my way and I had to carve out time to focus on it. The most rewarding has been hearing how much people have loved Havoc and Crew.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

A huge respect for military working dogs and their handlers, and a hope that people will find ways to support these amazing teams.
