FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

By Donna Gartshore

Thank you for inviting me to guest post. It’s a pleasure to be here.

You asked about my favorite Christmas traditions. That made me pause and think and I realized that the things that I enjoy most at Christmas all happen before the actual day.

I love the Advent Season. I love the time of preparation and anticipation and all that goes with it. And I love that God gives us a chance to remember and prepare for His Son every year, because He knows we need a reminder.

Of course, we have reminders and times of preparation every day throughout the year, but none – and this is just my opinion – that carry the same joy, the same determination to love one’s neighbor and to keep the peace as does the Advent Season.

As a child I knew it was the time when my mom would be baking treats that we only got at Christmas time: Nanaimo bars with dark chocolate, coconut and custard filling; Buttery shortbread garnished with red or green maraschino cherries; or the family recipe of cheese cookies that have cheese grated right into the dough and a marmalade center. They are delicious. Take my word for it!

To this day, people look forward to receiving a gift of  the family cheese cookies. I wish I could say I was a baker. I’m not, my talents lie in other areas. But it just wouldn’t seem like Christmas to me without cheese cookies and other baking.

Another tradition we have leading up to Christmas is catching up with relatives that we don’t see as often as we would like. We meet for lunches and spend time sharing news of our families and talking about our Christmas plans.

On Christmas Eve, we go to church and then go over to my sister’s house where we share a late supper of delicious assorted appetizers and more of that delicious baking. Friends come and go and it’s an evening filled with food, visiting and, yes, anticipation.

As a child, I anticipated what waited for me under the tree the next morning, even though I knew that Christmas was Jesus’ birthday and I knew the He had died for us. But it wasn’t something I understood on a heart level.

To be honest, I don’t know if I will ever understand that as deeply and profoundly as it calls out to be understood. I don’t know if any of us can with our human imperfections in this world.

But, there is nothing to me like the feeling of sitting in church on Christmas Eve waiting, thinking, wondering, praying … The familiar carols play and our voices join in joyous harmony as we share again in the night of anticipation like no other, waiting not for an assortment of gifts but for THE gift, the greatest gift of them all, Someone to save us from our sins and give us a new beginning over and over again.

To keep being reminded of this is a Christmas tradition that trumps food, gifts and family visiting in my mind. I am so grateful for all of those things but I know I would be nothing without God’s saving grace

Merry Christmas to all!
