Author Interview

Welcome back, Darlene! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Mountain Abduction Rescue.

To start, can you share 5 random facts about this book?

- Hazel Hoyt comes from a large family and they all work in parks within Canada.

- Hazel’s son was creative in giving his mother “breadcrumbs” to try and locate him and his friends.

- A Pulaski is a special tool used by wildfire firefighters to create a firebreak. It combines an axe and an adze in one head.

- Mitchell is the firefighter first featured in my book, Explosive Christmas Showdown.

- A park warden in Canada is the equivalent to a park ranger in the United States.

What was the inspiration behind this story?
I have always loved the magnificent Rocky Mountains, so I thought it would make a great setting to base Mountain Abduction Rescue on (although my park/town are fictional). Plus, I wanted to write a story featuring a strong and determined female park warden from a large family

Can you share a little bit about any research that went into writing this story?
I researched Canada parks and park wardens, wildfire firefighting, what to do when you encounter a cougar, serial arsonists, plus more.

What does your writing routine look like?
I normally start with a concept and then create my characters with occupations that coincide with the story. After that I brainstorm the storyline and ask the “what if” questions, create the romantic conflict, etc. I’m a pantser, so I then just start writing! I normally write in the mornings until mid-afternoon. Then in the evenings work on social media.

If you had to describe your main character(s) in this story in just three words each, what would they be?
Hazel – strong, determined, stubborn

Mitchell – loving, gentle, protective

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life? The most rewarding?
Most challenging – the mother/son relationship. Not being a mother, I had to tap into being an aunt and use those feelings. Especially in the scene where the dog is digging in an area where her son’s bandana.

Most rewarding – that same scene! Even though I struggled writing it, it felt good when I re-read it. I hope I got it right!

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
That God’s mercies are new every day and we need to trust that He knows best for our journey. Also that we need to forgive those who we feel have wronged us.

  6. Wildfires can be so scary. I hear of them happening out west all the time and what just happened in Hawaii was such a nightmare. We don't have a lot of wild fires here in WV compared to other places but they do happen. We had one last fall that some idiot had set and sadly a forest ranger lost his life because of it.
