When the biggest bully in town has you in his crosshairs, you can run, or you can dig deep inside and discover who you really are. Steven Carlson finds himself saddled with an unexpected debt he cannot afford, changing his plans for a summer of fun to one that forces him to places he never wanted to go.

There are storms on the horizon and equally daunting storms of the heart. With a father he doesn’t understand and a mother he can’t remember, Steven’s sixteenth year launches him on a journey that will forever alter his world.

In one unforgettable season, Steven Carlson is pushed to the edge of disaster and forced to confront his prison of self-doubt.

“You guys do know these permits only allow you to drive with a licensed adult in the vehicle. Correct?”

“Yes ma’am,” Steven replied in a near whisper.

“We just borrowed it to see some friends,” said Jackson. “It’s the first day of summer and everything.”

The cop looked at Steven. “We’re two blocks from your house. Call your dad. Tell him to come and pick you up. Otherwise I’ll have to arrest you.”

“May we have our permits back now?” Jackson asked.

The cop shot Jackson a look that could have melted ice. “Just do what I tell you. I’ll decide what to do about the permits after I talk with Steven’s father.”

Steven dialed Dad’s number. It rang four times before a sleepy voice answered “Hello?” After what felt like an eternity, Dad’s pickup came into view. He stepped out, wearing a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, and a frown. His wavy-brown hair spiraled in all directions.

The cop ordered Steven and Jackson to “stay in the car” before she talked to Steven’s father. Steven leaned out the window to hear their conversation. “I’m Officer Christine McFarlane, and I believe we know one another.” She glanced back at the z4. “I stopped these boys for a broken headlight. Neither one of them has a license. Did you give them permission to take the car?”
