On Working with Sunrise Publication As a Lead Writer & Bringing Series To Life

It seems like forever ago that I started this journey with these three amazing draft authors. Now we get to watch the books release into the world and see how readers enjoy them—which is always the best part of writing!

Sunrise Publishing, if you don’t know, pairs a lead author with draft authors to create a series based in the story world of the lead author’s existing series. For me, that was Last Chance County.

The original Last Chance County series is ten books that are all Christian romantic suspense and in that series, the fire chief turns out to be a bad guy. Susan May Warren, Lindsay Harrel, and I, all agreed that a series set in the fire department would make for a great premise.

With Megan, Emilie, and Laura, we brainstormed a cast of characters for the truck engine crew, the rescue squad, and all the secondary characters we needed. We also brought in characters from the original series so the readers get to see them now (and how many kids they have). In the original series, Dean Cartwright is building a counseling center. We got to bring the Ridgeman Center to life and explore the hope that comes with reaching out and taking the hand that is offered to you on your journey to healing.

A characteristic of all the books I write is the family found in community, close friendships and the fellowship believers have with one another. This was something I found to be true within Sunrise, and the friendships that have grown there, and with each other as we brainstormed and crafted this series. Often as authors writing feels like a solitary endeavor. In the end, we all have to write our own books, that’s always going to be true—anis usually when we complain, because it’s hard!! But working together as a team on this series meant we were able to share ideas, help each other grow and spend time praying together. It isn’t always perfect, but God puts us on these paths for a reason and He brought a lot of joy to me through it.

I love pouring into people, and I get to do that with Sunrise.

Along the way, I’ve learned so much. I’m excited for this series and all that will come after it.

The fire department’s truck crew and rescue squad are a bit of a hot mess. There may or may not be food fights involved. My hope is that all the readers enjoy their journey to creating a team and the adventures they have along the way. We love these characters, and we hope you do as well.
