EXCERPT

Adam stared at her for a long time, then closed his eyes for a beat. When he met her gaze again, she tried not to melt at the warmth there.

“Since you asked so nicely.”

“You won’t regret this.” Her ankle twisted as Carrie landed wrong on her high heel, and she reached out to grab hold of Adam so she wouldn’t fall. He pulled her into his arms.

“Whoa, there.”

“I suppose I should wear more sensible shoes when I come out to the farm.”

“Sound thinking.”

She glanced at him, hoping he didn’t notice her pounding heart. If he did, he didn’t react. Instead, he held her gaze with an intent expression that made her breath lodge in her throat. His gray eyes flashed and still she held on.

She should move away. She would. In a moment. Right now the feel of his arms around her, how he only had eyes for her, made her pulse race. How did he have this hold over her? Yes, he was good-looking and nice and smart, but it seemed like this mutual attraction had suddenly jumped to the next level. Like neither of them expected it and didn’t quite know what to do about it.

Voices in the distance broke the spell.
