Genre: Christian / Non-Fiction / Spiritual Growth

Explore the intersection between culture, identity, and faith in this new release from an earthly immigrant who gained a spiritual perspective.

What is my purpose? Why do I exist? A sense of self and belonging are two questions many of us struggle to answer.

And what if you are a foreigner in another land?

How does one adjust to a new culture? Discover their place in a new society?

For Mabel Ninan, born and raised in India and an immigrant in America shortly after marriage, the search for those answers sent her on a journey that led to an unexpected and exciting discovery.

God revealed she was not only an earthly immigrant but also a spiritual one, created with a unique calling to impact His kingdom. Mabel’s renewed perspective imbued her with joy and hope, urging her to share the message with others.

Drawing from her personal experiences and by examining the lives of biblical heroes, Mabel sheds light on what it means to live as a citizen of Heaven on earth. Far from Home will inspire you to:

 • Embrace your identity as a foreigner on earth.

 • Make your home with God.

 • Find community and common purpose with fellow sojourners.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born and raised in the minority Christian community in India, Mabel Ninan moved to the US in 2008 shortly after getting married. In nearly thirteen years of her marriage, her family has called ten different places across two continents and seven cities home. The challenges Mabel faced as an immigrant on the move led to a spiritual crisis that drew her nearer to God’s side where she learned valuable lessons about how to live as a citizen of heaven. Her mission is to inspire believers to embrace their pilgrim journey on earth and boldly pursue their heavenly calling. A contributor to Guideposts' All God's Creatures: Daily Devotions for Animal Lovers 2022, Mabel’s writings have appeared in The Upper Room, CBN.com, Leading Hearts Magazine, and (in)courage.me. She hosts a YouTube podcast called Immigrant Faith Stories where she shares testimonies of immigrants, refugees, missionaries, and cross-cultural ministry leaders. She has been serving in various roles in women's ministry for almost a decade. Mabel enjoys reading, traveling, and dancing, but nothing gives her more joy than having conversations about the Bible. Mabel is pursuing M.A. in Theological Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She lives with her husband, son, and Maltese pup in Northern California.

GUEST POST

The Inspiration Behind Far from Home
by Mabel Ninan

I was not prepared to cope with the flood of changes that engulfed me when I moved from India to the US in 2008. I was a newlywed, excited about starting a new phase of life abroad. But as the novelty of the experience faded, the struggle of living in an unfamiliar environment began to take its toll. I had left behind all the markers of identity—family, culture, community, and ministry. Who was I?  I also had to contend with deeper issues pertaining to self-esteem and self-worth because I felt I was not being productive or useful. What was my purpose?

Migration tested my faith and forced me to consider the depth of my love for Jesus.

Because of my husband’s job, we had to move frequently, preventing me from putting down roots in one place. I tried to fix my restlessness by volunteering and exploring new places and endless TV-watching. Nothing I did brought me joy or gave me satisfaction.

My desperate search for purpose and belonging brought me to my knees before the throne of God. I knew that only He was the answer to my problem. I joined a Bible study and began spending more time meditating on His Word. Slowly, God turned my perspective around, showing me that my struggle was also my strength.

I discovered my true identity, as not only an earthly immigrant but also a spiritual one by design, a pilgrim of heaven just passing through. My longing for stability and rootedness was a shadow of an inbuilt, God-given desire to make my home with Him. No place on earth could satisfy my pining for home because this earth was not my home.

Embracing my identity as a pilgrim on earth infused my life with a passion to chase after God’s plans for my life. As a citizen of heaven, I was called to adopt an eternal perspective and fix my eyes on unseen things, not earthly charms. The purpose of my short journey on earth was to fulfill my God-given calling with urgency and courage.

I felt called to share my message with other believers so that they, too, could find the key to a joyful and meaningful life.

In Far from Home, I draw from my personal experience as both an immigrant and I examine stories of biblical immigrant heroes to shed light on what it means to truly live as citizens of heaven. My prayer is to inspire readers to

·         Embrace their identity as foreigners on earth, set apart to fulfill their heavenly calling.

·         Make their home with God, recognizing that their earthly anchors are fleeting.

·         Find community in the universal body of believers and work together to further the kingdom.

I hope Far from Home resonates with those who are struggling to cope with transitions and trials, those who feel like they don’t fit in or belong anywhere, or those who are simply going through the motions of life, lacking passion or purpose. It is also meant to serve as a guidebook for Christians looking to build a stronger walk with God.
