More from Dana

Freakshakes. The name says it all, right? Allow me to explain. A freakshake is a milkshake festooned with so many extras (sprinkles, cookies, candy, donuts, cake, slabs of pie) that it is hardly liftable. It is the stuff my sugar fantasy dreams are made of! Now picture a freakshake shop called the Shimmy and Shake in the quaint and quirky town of Upper Sprocket in Eastern Oregon. Known as the “Swiss Alps” of Oregon, this fictional place is the new home to a woman named Trinidad Jones, a lady starting out on the second phase of her life after her husband’s betrayal. Sprinkle in a dose of Papa Luis, her darling Cuban grandfather (inspired by my own Cuban grandfather) who drives a classic Buick, and a devoted service dog flunk out named Noodles. You know what’s missing? A murder, of course! That happens shortly after Trinidad opens her new shop, and from there on out it’s a sticky, spine tingling, sweet and satisfying and slightly funny adventure in mystery land. I had an absolute blast writing the first installment in this series, and I’m knee deep in the second as I write this. Thank you for coming along on the adventure and I hope it’s as satisfying as a monster milkshake!

My Thoughts

What do you get when you mix a small-town, delicious ice cream treats and murder? The makings of a great cozy mystery series, of course!

Pint of No Return is the first book in Dana Mentink's Ice Cream Shop Mystery series. In the story, we are taken to the small town of Upper Sprocket where we meet Trinity. Having divorced her embezzling husband, she finds herself heading to his hometown to turn the shop he'd given her into her own ice cream shop. What she finds there is a town full of fun characters, two more ex-wives... and murder!

I must admit that I did find the start of this story to be a bit on the slow side--- or at least slower than I typically prefer in a cozy, but it did pick up pace pretty quickly. We were introduced to a wide variety of characters and lots of possible suspects to consider. While I think sometimes there can be a little bit of a character overload in some books that make it harder to keep everyone straight, I actually found this one to be pretty easy to follow. It kept me guessing and wanting to figure out whodunnit, all with the small town charm and some sweet treats... a truly ideal cozy!

If you're looking for your next cozy mystery series, grab a bowl on ice cream and check this one out!
