Are you ready for the FIRST EVER Netflix Original Christian movie!?

"A Week Away" is just days away from it's Netflix premiere and this is one NOT to be missed. Check it out:

Troubled teen Will Hawkins (Kevin Quinn) has a run-in with the law that puts him at an important crossroad: go to juvenile detention or attend a Christian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will opens his heart, discovers love with a camp regular (Bailee Madison), and sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it.

My own experiences attending a Christian camp in high school are still some that I consider the greatest in my life. Not only did I form lasting friendships that remain to this day, but it also shaped who I am as a Christian. As such, when I first heard about the premise of this movie, I was excited to check it out. I wanted to see if they could come close to accurately depicting that experience on film. I was recently given the chance to check out the movie before it's Netflix premiere later this week.

The verdict? I absolutely adored it! While there were of course many, many differences than my own camp experiences (are the movies EVER really all that true to life?), there was certainly enough similarity to bring me back to those days. Attending a Christian camp is a rather unique experience. On the one hand it's a lot of laughter and fun... with all of the adventure and activity one might expect from ANY camp experience. I can remember laughing to the point of tears on more than one occasion. On the other hand,  at a good camp it can be  a really deep spiritual experience as well. Emotions really were all over the place. Though I'd never experienced any myself, camp romances (or crushes at least) were certainly a thing. Some campers like myself were raised in Christian homes and were already strong believers, whereas others-like Will in the film- well, let's just say church camp would not have been their first choice of summer activities. Regardless of the reason we were there, I feel like we all walked away at the end of the week changed for the better. This movie seemed to depict those various aspects very well--- making me both laugh and cry throughout!

But the best part? It's a musical too... and I LOVE a good musical!

A musical is only as good as the music... and the music in this one was fantastic. It featured a great blend of well-known contemporary Christian songs mixed with some fantastic new originals too. The hits blended in so well with the movie that honestly had I not already been familiar with most of them myself, I wouldn't have been able to tell which were old and which were new. I loved their version of Amy Grant's "A Place in This World". I adore this song anyway, but found stars Kevin Quinn and  Bailee Madison sang it with such emotion that it gave me all the feels. Speaking of feels, the campfire scene featured a medley of  Awesome God / God Only Knows that brought me right back to the emotional campfires I experienced at camp myself... moments in which I had never felt God quite so strongly (and moments in which Awesome God also played in the background!). An absolutely beautiful scene that brought me to tears!

The three new original songs were penned by Adam Watts (High School Musical 3, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert). He also produced, arranged, engineered, mixed and mastered all the songs, apart from the bonus track with Johnnyswim. I definitely got some HSM vibes (in the best possible way) while watching the film, so I could definitely see it appealing to fans of that franchise!

The movie “A Week Away” will be available on Netflix on March 26, 2021.

As much as I loved the movie itself, I must say I found myself humming the music long after it had ended, so I was thrilled to learn that there would be a soundtrack available as well! The full 12-track soundtrack features CCM hit songs “Baby, Baby” (celebrating it's 30th year!), “Place In This World”, “Awesome God/God Only Knows", “Dive”, “The Great Adventure” and “Big House” originally from Christian artists Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, For King & Country, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Audio Adrenaline. Cast members like Kevin Quinn, Bailee Madison, Jahbril Cook, Kat Conner Sterling, Iain Tucker, and Sherri Shepherd will all be featured on the soundtrack as well. It includes a special feature and bonus track of husband and wife duo, Johnnyswim, performing “Best Thing Ever”... this catchy song new to the film will absolutely have you singing along. It's fantastic. Truly, there isn't a bad song on the movie soundtrack.
