Against Every Warning, She's Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as "Black Heart"

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed "Black Heart," she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing--and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden's court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope--and to each other--if they want to survive.

Roseanna M. White

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award-nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary. You can learn more about her and her stories at www.RoseannaMWhite.com.

Hi Roseanna! Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions and giving my readers the chance to get to know you and your latest book-On Wings of Devotion- a little bit better. I always like to begin these interviews the same way with something fun… tell us 5 random facts about yourself that we WON’T find in your bio!

Um…favorite color is purple (not in my bio, but you MAY pick up on the fact if you visit my website, LOL). I like coffee in the mornings and tea in the afternoons. My sister got ALL the neat-freak genes and left me, er, lacking. I have three cats (one a rescue just this last autumn). And one of my favorite snacks is Goldfish crackers.

Let’s talk writing! You have said that words are the air you breathe… and I love that sentiment! Was this a passion that you always knew you had, or one that came about later? How did you first realize this was what you were meant to do?

I’ve been writing stories since first grade and knew pretty much within months of learning how to pair subjects and verbs with a pencil in hand that this was My Thing. =) It took a few more years (and raiding my older sister’s library) for me to really develop a love for reading, but once I discovered The Chronicles of Narnia, that was it! Roseanna + Books = Lifelong Friends

I can only imagine the amount of time and research that must go into creating historical fiction and getting all the facts right! As a writer of historical fiction, what does that process look like for you?

At this point I’ve been in the same basic era and location for quite a few books, so instead of focusing on general research, I get to focus on specifics. =) In this case, I studied up on WWI pilots and nurses, a bit about naval diving, and of course plenty that was going on in the Intelligence hub of Room 40!

On Wings of Devotion is book number two in The Codebreakers series. Can you tell us a little bit about this book and the series as a whole? Will readers who have not yet had the chance to read the first book be able to enjoy this book, or will they need to catch up first?

This book will stand alone without any problems, though you’ll have a better understanding of the backdrop of Room 40 if you begin with The Number of Love. Even if you jump straight into this one, though, I’ll bring you up to speed on that remarkable organization where German codes were being intercepted, cracked, and decrypted twenty-four hours a day, every day. It was such a remarkable place, I just had to tell a bit of their story!

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

That sometimes we find ourselves surrounded by darkness—but it’s in those moments when, if we turn our heads, we’ll see the Light of God shining brightest.

I must admit that one of the things that I always enjoy about historical novels is checking out the beautiful fashions featured on many of the covers… and your covers have some GREAT ones. If you could choose ONE of these looks to recreate for yourself in real life, which would you choose?

Oh, so hard! I adore pretty much every dress that has been featured on my covers. Though I think I’d pick either Rowena’s from The Reluctant Duchess or Ella’s from A Lady Unrivaled just because the colors would suit me best. Though Ara’s on this one—SO FABULOUS. I’d take it in a heartbeat. ;-)

On Wings of Devotion is definitely on my TBR pile, but I have found that writers are so often some of the best readers too. If we were to take a look at your TBR, what might we find there?

A Pursuit of Home by Kristi Ann Hunter is my current read. But waiting their turn are:
The Way of the Brave by Susan May Warren
An Uncommon Woman by Laura Frantz
More Than Words Can Say by Karen Witemeyer
State of Lies by Siri Mitchell
Fire Storm by Nancy Mehl
The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions. Before we go, can you give us an idea on what we can look forward to next? Any projects you are currently working on that you can share?

Of course! Next up, of course, is the final book in the Codebreakers series, A Portrait of Loyalty. After that I’ll have a Civil War romance set in South coming out, Dreams of Savannah, and then my next series will begin with The Nature of a Lady—which is what I’m researching and beginning now. Super fun! I’ve been thinking of it as Expedition Unknown meets Downton Abbey—treasure hunting, artifacts, a scientifically-minded heroine, and some classic mix-ups because said heroine has the same name as the hero’s sister, who has mysteriously vanished… Can’t wait to really dig into the writing!
