Help Make Sense of Health Insurance With Fairos

Let's talk health insurance!

I know, I know... not something most of us want to talk about is it? The reality is many of us haven't had the greatest experiences with healthcare for one reason or another. Trust me, I understand all too well.

When my husband and I were first married, insurance was not a problem. He was active duty military, and so our insurance was taken care of. Easy. Was it perfect? Of course not, I imagine no insurance truly is... but easy at least.

And then he got out of the military. It wasn't part of our plan, but life happens and suddenly that whole insurance thing? Well, we were in for quite the rude awakening. We found ourselves being in a position of having to seek out private insurance. It wasn't offered through my husband's work, and through the marketplace, etc we weren't able to afford it. While our children qualified for medicaid, my husband and I were forced to go without- certainly not an ideal situation for someone such as myself with ongoing, worsening health issues.

But aside from affordability issues, this time in waiting and searching also showed me just how confusing insurance truly is. Deductibles, premiums, co-pays... it was like a language all of its own. And it was a language that I did not speak. As it turns out, I wasn't alone. I recently had the chance to participate in a call talking about this very topic. I heard stories from many other mom bloggers, and while our individual circumstances varied greatly, we all found we had one thing in common: health insurance difficulties!

Thankfully, Fairos is trying to change all that! They are trying to change the perception of this confusing and often frustrating subject of health insurance!

So, what is Fairos?

Fairos is a brand-new startup looking to change what’s broken about medical insurance. Their team has been working with large companies to help their employees get the cheapest rates and the highest quality care for years. In that process they realized that no one paying more for insurance than individuals like us. They believe that is wrong, and plan to do something about it.

“Big medical” has created a maze of complexity for the patient experience, including high premiums and medical bills that are intentionally confusing. Fairos plans to fight against that and hopes to see millions of people receiving the medical care they need without the crippling and confusing effects of high medical costs.

Sounds pretty great, right? And today I'm sharing three ways in which they are planning on doing so:

  • Bill Negotiation. Did you know that medical bills are negotiable? I didn't either, and even if I had, I wouldn't even know where to begin! The team at Fairos will negotiate with the insurance company FOR you to help determine what savings are possible and to help reduce costs wherever possible. We all know that hospital bills can be overwhelming, so I love that there is someone else who know what they are doing who can help make it more affordable!

  • Care-Coordination. The bills aren't the only thing that can be confusing about healthcare... the actual care itself can be such a headache...especially when dealing with a major health issue like surgery. As part of their care-coordination, Fairos would help establish the right care for you- appointments, therapies, etc. This allows us to better focus on what we should be focusing on--- getting better!
  • TeleHealth. This is perhaps the service I would be most excited for--- allowing patients to have non-acute appointments with a doctor via email, phone or video call. Let's be honest, the last thing you want to do when you are under the weather is to pack up the kids, get in the car and wait in a crowded doctor's office, exposing yourself to even MORE germs, right? This option allows you to skip all that! On a personal level, because I a) struggle with social anxiety and b) have no transportation, this appeals to me on multiple levels as well.

I don't know about you, but these all sounds like fantastic services that would help ME navigate health insurance better! And they want to know how else they can best serve YOU. Help them out by filling out the survey below:
