Meet the Descendants: A Disney Descendants Movie Review {+ Activity Sheets}

**DVD received for review. All thoughts are 100% my own.

With a name like 'A Modern Day Fairy Tale', it really is no surprise that I LOVE fairy tales. In fact, I've talked about my love of princesses quite often. I particularly love all things Disney princess. Needless to say, when I heard that the newest Disney Channel Original Movie 'Descendants' was all about the children of some of my favorite Disney princesses and villains... I was THRILLED! Just take a look:

In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic “Beauty and the Beast”) is poised to take the throne.  His first proclamation:  offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella de Vil, Maleficent the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters.  These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes, including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan.  However, the evil teens face a dilemma.  Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?

Sounds pretty fantastic, right? I may be coming up on 28 years old, but I'll admit, I was looking forward to it. There was just one little problem... we don't have Disney Channel!

Like so many others these days, our family made the choice to do away with cable television. When I heard about this movie, I must say I was bummed. BUT guess what? Rather than making us wait, Disney released the DVD on the same day it premiered on TV!! Now even those of us without a paid TV service could enjoy the film! And boy, did we! We had to pop it in as soon as it arrived.

Now, I am a huge fan of Disney Channel movies. From the more well-known ones like High School Musical, Xenon and Luck of the Irish, to the lesser known Miracle in Lane Two and Tru Confessions... I pretty much love them all. But this might very well be among my new favorites! The story was fun and unique (but still that great lesson that so many DCOMs are made of), the costumes were perfection...and the music, oh the music!! Immediately after we finished watching my son started singing one of the songs from the film! He loved the new stuff, but I of course loved the fun throwback to my childhood with a remake of Be Our Guest!

I will admit however I was a little bit disappointed that Kristin Chenoweth did not sing more... I just love her! But she definitely rocked as Maleficent either way! The die hard princess fan in me also wasn't thrilled at the fact that the children of my favorites were less than kind and gentle as their parents were before them, BUT then that would not have made for as interesting a story, so it worked for the movie!

Overall, I really loved this movie and am keeping my fingers crossed for more to come!

Check your local listings to catch it on Disney Channel or pick up the DVD in store today!

  3. It's fun to see a new twist on classic fairy tale characters. It's sounds like it could be an awesome story of redemption, forgiveness and making good choices despite the culture you've been raised it. How awesome!!
