I should go back and find Muriel and Vivienne. They have powerful connections. Their husbands can protect me. I must be mad to be following Da’s orders, boarding an unknown vessel and looking for a captain whose name I do not know. She crossed the plank into the boat. A few flickering lanterns graced the deck, their light less prominent now in the growing sunrise. She paused. What if the captain and first mate denied knowing her father? After coming so far, would she now be arrested for trespassing? No, she told herself. Da would not leave this to chance. The captain and crew will know of him. And if they don’t, it’s a good thing I can talk my way out of anything.
“Hello? Captain?” Her voice sounded small. She summoned authority, as if she were a fine lady used to having her word followed. “I am looking for the captain of the Goldfinch. Is anyone aboard?”
Lord, let me not have to venture into the cabin to find the owner. Her prayer fluttered heavenward as the plank creaked behind her. She whirled, and her jaw dropped slightly at the man before her. He was not the cantankerous old sailor sporting shoots of gray and a gold tooth she’d imagined.
“Are you following me, lass?” Her champion studied her, a hint of a smile curving his lips.
She gasped. “N- no.”
“Then who is asking after the captain?”
Da had said not to share her name with anyone, but as this was the vessel her father had sent her to and this man was the captain of it, she
answered, “Logan Hale sent me. I am his daughter.”
His left brow lifted. “And?”
She pulled her reticule from her hidden pocket and gave it a little shake. “And I-I have funds and need passage to the port of Tain.”
Jamie Malcolm had never lost his breath over a woman— but neither had he ever seen a beauty like Tadgh’s willowy daughter confronting danger.
