One of the best things about writing fiction is getting to experience things that I never would in real life. That has never been truer than with The Stand-In, the hero of which is a tech billionaire who lives on a private island.
Living on your very own island is complicated! You need infrastructure—electricity, water, internet, boats to get you to and from the mainland, vehicles to get you around the island, on-site fuel tanks, roadways and driveways for the vehicles, a dock complex for the boats. It was great fun to learn and write about all this, but in real life, it would be a heavy cognitive load—as Tamryn, the heroine, soon discovers.
As he opened the door that led to the river, Tamryn’s head spun with the sheer volume of Hal’s personal property, and how rapidly he solved problems that could be solved by money…Being a billionaire must be exhausting, although he seemed to be bearing up okay.
If you’re going to live on a private island, you need a place to lay your head—and if you’re a billionaire, you can afford to go all out. I consulted my trusty Better Homes and Gardens house-plan magazine and found a beautiful 4400-square-foot English country house with lots of gables and nooks and bays and niches and things. It was fun orienting the house on the island and fitting it up for the hero and his housemates, planning who would get the master suite and where the home laboratory would go. This is in sharp contrast to my own house, an efficient rectangular structure of 2000 square feet.
I wouldn’t mind spending a week or two in a big, luxurious English country house on a private island, but I don’t think I’d want to own one and deal with cleaning it, heating it, cooling it, and paying taxes on it. At the end of the day, I’d rather read—and write—about such places from the comfort of my actual home. Fiction gives me the best of both worlds.
