Author Interview

Welcome, Rhonda! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book The Heir’s Beloved.

Can you share 5 random facts about yourself that we won’t find in your bio?

1. I write historical romance, but I love to read speculative fiction. Trekkie alert.
2. Every hero I write is just a reflection of my real hero – my husband. He gives me plenty of fodder.
3. I know all the words to the Indiana State Song… “Back home again, in Indiana..” And I only lived there three years as a child.
4. I’m an accomplished flutist.
5. I’m a research geek. I can find myself reading about space nebulas when I started researching what was used in the 1500s for smelling salts.

When did you first discover you had a passion for writing?

My first English prof in college called me to his office for a one-on-one appointment. I thought I was in trouble, but he told me I had a true gift. That vote of confidence sparked a fire that’s still burning.

What drew you to historical fiction?

When my love of research brushed against the purely romantic costumes and images in my head of historical settings, they birthed a bouncing baby historical romance.

What was the most interesting or surprising thing you learned in researching this book?

The previously mentioned 16th-century fluid used to revive an unconscious person was made from fermented horse urine. I think I’d wake up, too!

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?

It was very difficult to write during a period of history that was violent and misogynistic while maintaining my determination not to write anything gory or exploitative. Maintaining Christian publishing standards led to many revisions to attain a good balance between realism and my commitment to uplifting content

The most rewarding? 

This is the manuscript my agent read when she decided to sign me as a client. It also won me the Writer of the Year award from Serious Writer, Inc. The prize was a trip to New York City—my first.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

I hope readers will recognize in both the hero and heroine that some decisions we make are based in a spiritual condition called “the orphan heart.” When we believe God is a cruel taskmaster to be pleased, we cheat ourselves of the close Father-child relationship He seeks with us.
