If you read my previous review on Why Couples Drive Each Other Crazy, you know that I had previously been pleasantly surprised by Dr. Ricky Arenson's writing style. So, following up his marriage book with his parenting one? Seemed like a no brainer to me...
About the Book:
Spaceship Parenting: a humorous, values based parenting guide framed as a conversation between Ricky and Nova, an alien visitor who thinks modern parenting is holding humanity back. Practical, evidence-based rules on leadership, boundaries, emotional intelligence, resilience, and family connection, all with a comedic tone. Strong fit for parents and homeschooling families.
i. Prologue – The Landing
Why are so many parents exhausted and struggling today?
A fresh way of thinking that could transform your family.
ii. Rule #1 – Be the Manager
Children don't need another friend—they need a leader.
How calm, confident parenting creates happier families.
iii. Rule #2 – Make a Pact to Survive
The greatest threat to your marriage may be the children you love most.
Protecting your relationship is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.
iv. Rule #3 – Positive Energy Must Outweigh Negative
Negativity is everywhere—but it doesn't have to define your family.
How to raise optimistic, resilient, and emotionally secure children.
v. Rule #4 – Work With, Not Against Them
Teenagers are the most difficult life form in the known universe.
Why cooperation succeeds where conflict never can.
vi. Rule #5 – Outcome Is Proportional to Investment
What really determines who your children will become?
The qualities that matter most—and how to nurture them.
vii. Rule #6 – The Stop Rule
Every catastrophic mistake begins with one bad decision.
Teach children the habit that prevents countless disasters.
viii. Rule #7 – Raise Minds, Not Mayhem
Every great civilization is built in its classrooms before its parliaments.
Why knowledge, curiosity, and wisdom shape the future.
ix. Rule #8 – Use Technology to Advance Your Civilization
Silicon Valley is fighting for your child's attention—and it's winning.
Take back control before the algorithm becomes the parent.
x. Rule #9 – Teach Children to Become Their Own Managers
Your job isn't to manage your children forever.
It's to teach them to manage themselves.
xi. Rule #10 – Transcend to a Utopian Civilization
What if better parenting could change the future of humanity?
The blueprint for raising children who help civilization evolve.
About the Author:
Dr. Ricky Arenson is an endocrinologist, geriatrician, award-winning author, educator, and speaker based in Melbourne, Australia. Drawing on decades of clinical experience together with psychology, neuroscience, and biology, he translates complex science into practical strategies for happier relationships, better parenting, and more meaningful lives. His books combine evidence, humor, and compassion to explain why people behave the way they do and how understanding those differences can transform families and relationships. His engaging style has made him a sought-after speaker on relationships, parenting, leadership, and the intersection of science and everyday life.
Like I said, I enjoyed his previous book very much, so I went into this one with high expectations. And I was happy to find this one was packed full of that same laugh out loud humor that I'd enjoyed about the previous. It's a parenting book with real practical tips, yes... but it's also told in the perspective of a conversation with an alien who has come to earth and telling him the mistakes they see human parents making. As someone who very much enjoys aliens, this was definitely a fun concept for me. But it was definitely the mix of humor and practicality that made this one stick out. Yes, I laughed... but it was also full of parenting advice that just made sense. Did I agree with all of it? No. Did all of it apply to my family and as a parent of a special needs child? No. And that's okay. I tend to think with any type of book like this, not every single aspect is going to work for and apply to every family, so you can take what you need and weigh out the rest. Either way, this was an enjoyable and practical parenting book that is certainly worth checking out.
