The riveting start to an adventure-driven romantic suspense series from a debut author

Determined travel blogger Julia Stevens is on her final assignment in snowy Silverberg, Colorado. She's running from her past—and God—but the charm of small-town life brings little comfort when she's face-to-face with the winter sport that killed her sister: skiing. Upon her arrival in town, she discovers a dead body and is quickly compelled to research the situation, give justice to the man's story, and kick off her new career in journalism.

Cade Haskins is back home after a failed mission and his subsequent retirement from the DEA. His father's declining health has pushed Cade to prioritize family, and he helps at the historic Silverberg Hotel on his dad's behalf. When Julia shows up at the hotel, Cade becomes her local contact. He quickly realizes she has a knack for sniffing around where she shouldn't, and he attaches himself to her side.

With the local death connected to a meth ring, Julia's investigation has unknowingly put a target on her back. As the danger increases and she begins to learn more about Cade and his family, she finds herself trusting the God she was running from. And Cade? He doesn't want to get dragged back into DEA work, but it seems like he may not have a choice if he wants to protect Julia . . . and his growing attraction to her.

Author Interview

Welcome, Kelly! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book High Exposure.

Thank you for having me! It’s so much fun to connect.

Can you share 5 random facts about yourself that we won’t find in your bio?

  • I love to waterski and have enjoyed lake sports my whole life.
  • I’m terribly clumsy and only wish I could be coordinated.
  • I’m tone deaf, but I love music.
  • My favorite color is light purple.
  • When I was in college, I studied abroad in London. My best friend and I spent two weeks backpacking all over Europe!

When did you first discover you had a passion for writing?

  • I have been writing in some form or another since I was little (journals, stories, newspaper articles, blogs). I first discovered writing fiction in 2014. I tackled the first iteration of this story and fell in love with the story world and creating characters.

What drew you to writing suspense?

  • I read a book by Dani Pettrey and became enamored with the blend of suspense and romance. I think the best love stories simmer under tension, and suspense adds the perfect ingredients to heighten the love story. I also love that suspense brings higher stakes to a story—there’s more to both lose and gain for characters when they are fleeing for their lives or solving a mystery.

High Exposure is your debut novel… What was it like to see your words in print for the first time?

  • It was surreal! This process has been years of work, prayer, editing, creating, and dreaming. I couldn’t believe I held a physical copy of the book I’d been working on!

As a suspense writer, what is the most incriminating search we’d find in your search history?

  • I can’t tell you! Just kidding J For this story, I had to research how meth labs worked—common ingredients, locations, arrests, etc. When I want to be authentic and accurate, the searches get detailed…and sometimes blocked!

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?

  • Cade’s character was the most challenging—he couldn’t tell Julia about his work with the DEA, but he needed to protect her from danger. It was a fine line to write—making him authentic and honest, but battling this piece of information he couldn’t tell her. I also had to work very hard and do a LOT of research to get the law enforcement components as accurate as possible.

    The most rewarding?

  • By the end of this book, I felt like I’d wrestled these words into a story. There were days and parts of the process that felt seamless, and other pieces felt like wrestling a bear into submission! Finally, after all the edits, it was so rewarding to know that all the time, effort, and prayer resulted in a full book.

If you could describe your main character(s) in just three words each, what would those words be?

  • Cade: loyal, protective, capable

  • Julia: adventurous, passionate, determined

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

  • Of course, I hope they love the story! I want readers to be whisked away on an epic adventure and dream about the Colorado mountains. More than that, I want readers to take away the truth that God is always at work, that there’s always hope, and that we can turn to Him.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Before you go, where can readers follow along to see what’s coming next?

  • Thank you for all the fun questions! I am active on Instagram (@kellyborjaswrites), and I send a monthly newsletter with all of the behind-the-scene details. Sign up here: https://kellyborjas.com/

And, stay tuned: Ace and Ami’s story will be next in Dark Chasm. Here’s the working blurb: When an ultrarunner encounters deadly fugitives on a mountain run, can her professional bodyguard—and brother’s best friend—protect her and bring the fugitives to justice, before it’s too late?
