      “Skylee, you have a place with me. If you want it.” He let out a long breath. “I know what it’s like to grow up with Margie, and you don’t have to go back. I don’t need to know why either.”

     Leaning her head over her lap, she nodded. A teardrop plopped onto her thigh. 

     “Do you live here now?” Her voice sounded like a little girl who played with dolls, not the teenager who slammed doors for exercise. 

     “No. Charlotte. I don’t know how, but we’ll work it out, okay?” Which meant talking with Margie. Fighting with her? Wonderful. 

     She nodded again. 

     “Don’t be scared I’ll send you packing every time I raise my voice, okay? That’s just me emphasizing.” 

     Pumping her feet like a bicycle, she dug her feet in the sand in front of her chair. “Mom has a new boyfriend.” 

     His heart seized. She offered a tidbit of life with Margie. Is the boyfriend why she left? Should he ask or let her statement lie between them? 

     Hello, God? 

     “I don’t like him.” She scratched her thumbnail back and forth on the wooden arm of her chair. 

     He dreaded the answer, but he had to know. “Has he ever … hurt you?” 

     She quit scratching the arm and gripped the wooden piece with her hand. Feet still pumping, she buried her toes in the sand mound. “Not exactly.” 

     Clutching the handles of his own chair for support, he swallowed several inappropriate words. 

     Taking a stabilizing breath, he chose his words carefully. “You never have to go back to her house. Got it?” 

     Could he promise that? He wasn’t Skylee’s guardian.  

     Turning her head, she met his eyes. Hers swam in glistening tears. She nodded, then stood and climbed into his lap. 

     Stunned, he sat still. She clung to his T-shirt and sobbed. Slowly, he slid his arms around his sister. 

     Thank You, God, for bringing her to me.

About the Author

Hope Toler Dougherty holds a Master’s degree in English and taught at East Carolina University and York Technical College. Her early novels are Irish Encounter, Mars…With Venus Rising, and Rescued Hearts. Her Forever Series includes Forever Music, “A Hatteras Surprise,” a novella featured in Candy Cane Wishes and Saltwater Dreams, Forever Home, Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA)’s 2023 Romance Novel of the Year, and Forever Free, first place in the Faith, Love, & Hope Reader’s Choice Award for 2025.

A chronic community volunteer as well as a member of ACFW, NC Writers’ Network, and Neuse River Writers, she shares her belief in God “Who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” in her daily life and stories.
