Book Excerpt

I returned the pin to its place, then reached for what I had come to see. A ring hanging from a gold chain, dangling next to a heart- shaped charm and wrapped in tissue that nearly turned to dust as I unwrapped its treasure. I tossed the tissue into a nearby wastebasket, vowing to replace it later, then held the ring up between my thumb and index finger. 

  The early afternoon sunlight skipping through the window caught the diamond— round and perfect— and sent a prism of color slicing into the air. Into my heart. My soul. Years had passed since I wore the ring on my left hand. Too many years. It no longer belonged to me, and yet, as social protocol dictated, it did. He had been the one to call off the engagement. Not with words but with action. A single, heartbreaking action. After promising me the moon and the stars and everything in between, he had left me with nothing to show for what I thought was finally mine— love, pure and exhilarating. Instead, this ring became a symbol of what I had lost.
