“I was hoping you’d be here, Kendall.”
She turned her attention to the pastor. “Oh? Something to do with the Son-Rise Breakfast?”
Glancing toward the table that held an iron napkin holder and red ceramic salt-and-pepper shakers situated in the center, he said, “Perhaps we should sit down.”
Was it Kendall’s imagination or did the pastor look uncomfortable? Yet he’d always struck her as calm, cool and collected. And that had her feeling unsettled. “Is something wrong?”
As the others pulled out chairs, she joined them, her insides tangling, though she had no idea why.
“Kendall, there’s no easy way to say this—” the pastor began “—so I’m just going to say it.”
The knots in her stomach tightened.
“One of the committee members was curious about your career as a chef, and they did an internet search.”
Feeling as though a dark storm cloud had settled over her, Kendall closed her eyes as the breath she’d been holding rushed out on a sigh. She knew where this was going.
“They came across a social-media post by a chef who shared some unflattering comments about you.”
Despite the tightening in her chest and the quivering sensation taking over her body, she willed herself to calmly look him in the eye. “Unflattering would be putting it mildly. They were designed to ruin my career.” And clearly had a much farther reach than she’d imagined.
