Morgan focused on Merlin as if giving him a tutoring lecture. “As you know, most dragons keep a rubellite embedded between two scales. It’s part of paying homage to their heritage. Since Goliath was a rebel, he didn’t carry around a memory of his father. Instead, he carried a memory stone in his scales. A memory stone is a gem that stores information about where it has been—images of locations and indicators of the directions it took to get from place to place.”

“Ah!” Merlin said. “I’m getting the picture. First, if Goliath’s death caused the water crisis, that means he had to regularly go somewhere to do something that prevented the trap from springing. Second, if someone could locate that place, maybe he or she could discover the cause. Third, Sabina has the keen eyesight to look into the memory stone and trace Goliath’s movements. She can find the cause.”

“Very good, Merlin. But it’s not that easy. Any location that Sabina goes while tracking Goliath’s movements might or might not be the location we’re seeking. Each spot would have to be investigated, but since she won’t know what she’s looking for, it will be a difficult task, indeed.”

Merlin chuckled in a derisive manner. “Let me guess. You want to go with her because you’ll more likely be able to identify what we’re looking for.”

“Of course. Who better to analyze a location for signs of a toxin? Not only that, surely Goliath set snares and traps to guard the area. Without a guide to watch for them, the result could be deadly for Sabina.”
