There are some films that we enjoy simply for their entertainment value. There are other films that instead are there not to entertain, but to shine light on important topics that need awareness. Those films aren't always easy to watch, but they deliver powerful messages that need to be seen. Today, I'm sharing one such film: Still Hope. Take a look:
Hope, a teenager from a tight-knit community, finds herself in danger when the person she believes to be a new friend proves unsafe. Taken from all she knows, Hope is forced into sex trafficking and stripped of her identity. After finding freedom from her captors, Hope discovers that survival is only the first step. Inspired by true stories, Hope’s journey is a powerful illustration of the courage it takes to walk the complex path of recovery.
I was recently given the opportunity to view a screening of this powerful film prior to its theatrical release and my goodness, what a film! Because of the subject matter, this one is anything but lighthearted, so please be sure to keep that in mind. While I think it's important to get these stories out there and bring awareness, it's also important to consider your own mental health. I will say, as the mother to a preteen girl, this one was definitely a tough watch. One of the things that I think this film does really well though is balancing the realities of trafficking with compassion and leaving a feeling of hope in the end. It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of what so many girls and women have lived through, but it does so without showing all the nitty gritty details... and honestly, we don't need those details to understand all that is happening.
While this isn't an easy one, I do encourage those who can, watch it and spread the word. A portion of ticket proceeds will go towards organizations that care for victims of trafficking.
