Honoring a family vow…

He never expected love

When veterinarian Hank Hopson returns to Three Springs, Texas, with his five-year-old son, he’s determined to honor his wife’s last wish to heal family wounds. Taking a job at the local animal hospital, he’s paired with Gwen Bayer, the spitfire cowgirl working as his vet tech. She plans to get back on the rodeo circuit once her horse’s injury heals, and he’s headed for the city. But as their friendship deepens, it becomes impossible to deny their growing connection. How will they decide between the lives they’ve worked for—and the love that could change everything?

Book Excerpt

It was an unwritten rule that bad days required chocolate.
Gwen headed inside Five Star Grocery Depot and beelined straight for the candy aisle.
The pure milk chocolate bar was for the fact that Hank confirmed ZigZag’s diagnosis.
The dark chocolate bar was for Hank’s refusal to do the surgery on her horse.
Now the best surgeon was unavailable to her. Her future was still in question, and she was quite certain she could not change Hank’s mind. But more, she sensed there was pain behind Hank’s decision to step out of the OR and she wanted to know why. As if she was the one he confided in and leaned on. As if she wanted to be his person. But all she really wanted was more wins in the arena. Gwen grabbed two king-size chocolate almond bars.
As for the bag of white chocolate swirled candy kisses? Well, those she planned to eat until she got over her misplaced attraction for her neighbor turned colleague. Romantic feelings were entirely inappropriate for the workplace. Not to mention entirely one-sided on her part. After all, Hank had been nothing but professional and work-minded all day. And the moment she thought they’d shared on Grady’s front porch that morning was most likely a trick of the sun and too much caffeine.
Gwen turned and spotted the marshmallows on the bottom shelf. She tossed two bags into her basket and headed for the checkout before she second-guessed herself—only she rounded the endcap and barely missed colliding with the source of her chocolate binge. Gwen pulled back and said, “Hank!”
