Book Excerpt

After dinner we’d sat around the living room talking longer about Caleb’s latest case and a project Gemma was working on. My dad stood and began handing something to everyone in the room but me. I stared at my Dad waiting for an explanation. The expression he wore was of sheepish pride as he held up a handful of what looked like metal buttons.

“Vote for Willow” they read, surrounding a picture of me holding my guitar. The campaign-style pins were both corny and incredibly sweet, the kind of thing only a father could get away with. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I took one from his hand.

“Dad, I—“

“Should've done this sooner,” he cut in, his voice rough like he was clearing it from emotion. “I want you to know, I'm really proud of you, Willow. No matter what happens in Nashville.”

My chest ached as I threw my arms around him, holding on tighter than I had in years.

“Thanks, Dad. That means everything to me,” I said, the tears spilling over as I hugged him tight. There was a tremble in his arms that told me he felt the gravity of this moment just as much as I did.

“Your old man's learning that supporting your dreams is like backing the right horse in a race. Can't help but feel like I've won already, just seeing you chase after them.”

“Even if I don't make it?” I asked, pulling back to look at him.

“Especially if you don't make it. Because you tried, Willow. And trying takes guts.” His eyes locked onto mine.

“Besides,” he added with a wink, “with these buttons, how could America resist?”

I laughed through my tears, clutching the button like a talisman.

About the Author

Married to her best friend–the boy she met at just thirteen–she’s also a homeschooling mom to one teenage daughter, an artist who is the spitting image of her dad. Jennifer Carr is a self-diagnosed social media addict, aka the Queen of the Doomscroll, and she’ll read just about anything she can get her hands on.

Her passions are wide and deep: coffee, music, learning, animals, and above all, writing. She holds a degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Marriage & Family Counseling, certifications in Life Coaching and Health & Wellness Coaching, and is a certified Brain Health Professional. But despite all that, books are where her heart truly belongs. The day she published her first book, everything shifted.
