I was recently given the opportunity to check out this Bible for myself and share my thoughts. I'll be honest though, prior to receiving this Bible, the name Alexander Maclaren was unfamiliar to me. So, for those who are thinking the same, let's back up a bit more... who was he?
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on February 11, 1826, Alexander Maclaren was the pastor of Union Chapel in Manchester England from 1858–1903. Heralded as the “Prince of Expositors,” he is considered by many to be one of the best preachers of the nineteenth century, The popularity of Maclaren’s published sermons rivaled that of Charles Spurgeon, helping him develop global acclaim for remarkable biblical insights delivered in a poetic style. Maclaren’s works continue to be read and studied due to their timeless relevance, verbal beauty, and profound freshness.
While those already familiar with Maclaren might have an even larger appreciation for this Bible... it's still a good Bible for those of us for whom this is our first introduction. I appreciated the insights and applications all throughout this beautiful Bible that come from his works. These insights are mostly brief (with longer essays as well as book introductions), but plentiful throughout and offer a lot for those looking to understand their Bible better. I love the beautiful style, and even more so, love the index of features letting you know where to find all these insights, as well as an extensive concordance as well. This Bible is in the NKJV translation. Honestly, this is not one of my personal favorite translations, but it is one that is loved by so many... and one that makes sense for this particular study Bible!
