Dark Design by Nancy Mehl: Book Review

**ARC received via Netgalley for consideration. All opinions are my own.

The Book

As she began to lose consciousness, she realized that she'd just made a very serious mistake. . . .
She tried to call out for help, but she couldn't see anyone on the shore.
There was no one to save her.

When Erin Delaney learns that a serial killer has mimicked the murder portrayed in her bestselling novel, she joins her friend Kaely Quinn-Hunter, a former FBI profiler, in Virginia. Their reunion, only a few months after fending off an eerie killer in the woods of Tennessee, is bittersweet, as Kaely has been tasked by the FBI to recruit Erin's help to identify a suspect. The FBI's team is stumped by the murderer who re-creates killings from the books of multiple authors, with only ominous notes left behind. As Erin is drawn further into the web of fear and chaos, Kaely begins to fear for Erin's safety.

On top of tracking down a murderer, Erin must shoulder the weight of a haunted past and claims that she stole the plot of her novel from one of her sources. As she struggles on multiple fronts, the enemy looms closer than ever--and Erin's life hangs in the balance.

Bestselling author Nancy Mehl threads a plot of police investigations and shadowy evidence with heart-drumming suspense in this clean, high-stakes read that will thrill fans of Lynette Eason and Elizabeth Goddard.

Book Review

Nancy Mehl never fails to deliver stories that will draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish... and this one was absolutely no exception. Right from the first page, this one absolutely draws readers in... giving us a glimpse inside the mind of a killer, adding an extra layer of creepiness that takes this story to the next level. As an avid reader, I always enjoy books that feature authors or bookish characters/themes... but a serial killer using suspense books as the blueprint to carry out their murders? Well, that was a new one... this was such a great storyline, executed brilliantly with all the twists and turns that I find enjoyable in a suspense read. In the midst of that darkness though, we're also given a beautiful message of faith throughout the story too, keeping it from feeling too heavy despite the subject matter. If you enjoy Christian suspense, this is absolutely one to add to your TBR.

Dark Design is the second book in the Erin Delaney Mysteries series. While I do think those who have read the previous book will have a better understanding of Erin's history, I do think you could likely enjoy this one as a standalone without any problems.
