Book Excerpt

“If you’re not back in five minutes, I’m coming to find you,” Caleb said.

“Agreed.” Miriam just needed a few minutes alone to regain control of herself.

She was almost to the barn when a hand grabbed her and whirled her around.

She found herself face-to-face with Devon McCallister, one of the cousins who’d helped Owen escape. And he was a killer, just like Owen.

“The cops are here,” she said, her voice louder than normal, hoping one of them would hear her.

Devon sneered. “I saw’em pull in. That young cop and his girlfriend don’t scare me. I have the car parked on the next road. They’ll never find me.”

Before he could say anything more, she wrenched her hand free and shoved the heel of her hand against his nose. Blood spurted, splattering her pristine dress and the front of his shirt. He cursed, both hands going to his broken nose.

She whirled around and took off running toward Caleb. “Caleb!”

A gunshot barked behind her. The bullet brushed her skirt and hit the ground in front of her.

She might not survive the next one.
