Book Excerpt

A few feet away, David was stretched out on his sheepskins by the entrance. He was wide awake and couldn’t stop thinking about his strange guests and what to do with them. King Saul had given the order to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious, and he was certain these three kids were enemy spies. The Philistine army had attacked Israel, and they had surely sent out scouts to explore the land. His visitors didn’t look like a threat—too young and clumsy—but their behavior would be the perfect disguise. What a slick move on their part. He didn’t for one second believe their lost-wanderers-with-no-memory story. They were hiding something, and he had to be vigilant.
He had hoped to send them to his father the next day, but he realized he would have to wait for a servant to come since he couldn’t leave the sheep unattended. He was stuck and not happy about it.
Lord, what should I do? I need your wisdom. He turned over on his sheepskins.
He couldn't leave them by themselves. He had to keep them from fulfilling their mission if they were Philistines, but in the unlikely event they were actually lost, they would be easy prey for the many robbers or wild animals roaming the land. He had no choice but to take them with him, although he suspected they would be nothing but trouble.
