Book Excerpt

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do,” Betsy whispered, her voice raw.

“You don’t have to figure it out right now.” Gabe’s voice was gentle. “We’ll take it slow. One step at a time.”

He’d said we’ll. The word settled deep in her heart.

Later, when they stood in the twilight by Thunder’s saddle, Gabe offered his hand. “I’ll help you up.”

She hesitated, then took it. Warmth spread through her, unexpected but welcome. Once mounted, she adjusted her skirts, and Gabe swung up behind her, his presence steady and solid.

They rode in silence for a while, Thunder’s hooves beating a gentle rhythm beneath them. Finally, she murmured, “You don’t have to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Take care of me.”

“I want to.”

Simple words. No strings. But they wrapped around her like a warm blanket in winter.

As they approached her home, Gabe dismounted and helped her down. Their hands lingered longer than necessary.

“Thank you, Gabe.”

“Anytime, Miss Smith. You know that.”

And she believed him.
