Welcome, Jerusha! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Lethal Danger.
Can you share 5 random facts about the book?
- The Tri-City Fair featured in Lethal Danger is based on the real Minnesota State Fair, but I changed the name so I could take creative license whenever I wanted to deviate from the actual fair.
- The physical characteristics and appearance of Jazz Lamont, the Lethal Danger heroine, was originally inspired by actress Taylor Cole with red hair as she appeared in the Ruby Herring Mysteries movies.
- Lethal Danger is the first book I’ve written about an author. The hero, Hawthorne Emerson, is a bestselling crime thriller novelist.
- Lethal Danger features the most mystery elements of any book I’ve written to date. The characters must solve two murder mysteries, sifting through plenty of suspects.
- Lethal Danger is the most bookish novel I’ve written, as the story not only features an author but also Jazz, a passionate reader and fan of thriller novels.
What was the inspiration behind this story?
As with most of my stories, the inspiration first began with a character. When Jazz Lamont joined the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency in Book One, Hidden Danger, I got to know the courageous, but insecure woman who is an Army veteran with a retired Military Working Dog. My task, then, was to find the story that would facilitate her character journey of healing and redemption.
If you could describe your main character(s) in just three words each, what would those words be?
Courageous, romantic, vulnerable.
This is the fourth book in the Guardians Unleashed series. Will readers who have not yet read the previous books be able to enjoy this one?
Yes! Lethal Dagner is a standalone story by itself, with overlapping characters from the previous books.
Some of my launch team members hadn’t read any books of mine before Lethal Danger, and they loved the story! They shared in their reviews that they had no problem enjoying the book without having read the others first. Though they also said they are going to go back and read the previous books now that they know they love the characters and story world!
What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?
Very early on in the plotting process for Lethal Danger, this story proved particularly challenging for some reason I haven’t quite pinpointed. It went through many different possible themes, plots, motivations, etc., before arriving at the final concept and outline.
I was worried all the huge re-imaginings and changes might mean that more major changes would be needed later in the process, too. But once I found the right story, it stuck, and the Lord made it into something beautiful!
The most rewarding?
After I’d finished the outline for this novel, a new obstacle presented itself when life circumstances prevented me from writing the book in the timeline I had planned.
Faced with immovable deadlines, I had to ask God to do the impossible and enable me to write Lethal Danger faster than I’ve ever written a novel of this length.
He did it! It was so rewarding in the end to make the deadlines despite all the obstacles and delays, knowing this book only came together well and on time because of God alone.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
Jazz Lamont has experienced rejection for her whole life. And most of us have felt rejection at least once in our lifetimes. It hurts.
I hope that in reading this book, readers will discover the only way to experience healing from rejection—through the love of God who chooses His children before they choose Him and calls them to Himself, to hold and to cherish forever.
